BirdLife Europe and Central Asia (ECA) is the European and Central Asian Division of BirdLife International, and is one of the six regional offices of BirdLife International, a global Partnership of autonomous, national non-governmental conservation organisations, with a large grassroots membership in more than 115 countries and territories

We are looking for an enthusiastic and skilled individual who will coordinate the delivery of organizational development support to the BirdLife Partnership in the European Mediterranean.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Mediterranean Capacity Development Officer will oversee the implementation of the European component of the capacity-building programme ‘Hatch’, which aims to build stable and effective conservation NGOs in the Mediterranean Biodiversity Hotspot. It which involves 9 BirdLife Partners: Biom (Croatia), BirdLife Cyprus (Cyprus), BirdLife Malta (Malta), BPSSS (Serbia), CZIP (Montenegro), Doga Dernegi (Turkey), HOS (Greece), MES (North Macedonia), SPEA (Portugal). Organizational strengthening activities conducted under Hatch include quality assessments, coaching of CEOs and other staff, trainings, small grants and systems development. Hatch is currently entering its final year of a 5-year grant by the MAVA Foundation. In addition to the 9 European Partners, it includes 10 more countries across North and West Africa and the Middle East. The project is implemented by an international, cross-regional team. The Capacity Development Officer for the European Mediterranean will coordinate the delivery of activities in Europe and support the international Hatch team with cross-regional and project management tasks. In addition, the person will support the European regional director and fundraiser on emerging network development issues across the region.

MAIN DUTIES

Implementation of ECA Component of Hatch (ca. 50%)

  • Supervision of marketing training program delivery by selected service provider
  • Follow-up of 9 small grants made to ECA Partners (monitoring implementation and review of reports) 8 on public engagement and 1 on impact measurement and demonstration
  • Support to CiviCRM implementation by 6 ECA Partners. Set-up of system by IT company will be finalized by early 2022 but there is a need to facilitate Partner-to-Partner learning on ways to make optimal use of the system
  • Support to organization of ECA Fundraising Working Group as main platform for exchange of outcomes and lessons learned in ECA Hatch projects
  • Prepare financial reports quarterly and technical reports in January and October 2022
  • Facilitation of Partner-to-Partner support, in particular through webinars and exchange visits between neighboring Partners

Support to Global Hatch Team (ca 20%)

  • Support in planning and implementation of various capacity development activities, as part of the Hatch team, including development of intra and extranet, the communities of practice, production of webinars, videos, tools and guidelines on best practice tools for promotion of Hatch at relevant events
  • Collecting and analyzing information which demonstrate the impact of investment in organizational development made through the Hatch in function of the reporting of the donor (MAVA)
  • Collecting success stories for dissemination through BirdLife communication channels

Follow-up of selected institutional development issues in ECA Region (ca. 30%)

  • Support of affiliation process in Bosnia-Hercegovina and Albania e.g follow-up of recommendations formulated during assessment visits
  • Support Regional Director with emerging network development issues
  • Support Fundraising Officer with inclusion of capacity development activities in proposals to donors

REQUIRED PROFILE

The candidate will be an enthusiastic, positive, creative person who enjoys working with people and organizations from different cultures, who brings:

  • Good understanding of NGO development, preferably in the Mediterranean, Balkans or Eastern Europe
  • University degree in relevant field, e.g. development, management or relevant qualification with demonstrable experience
  • Established track record in organizational and capacity development, preferably in an NGO context but corporate or public sector experience will also be considered
  • Ability to build effective working relationships across cultural barriers
  • Strong internal and external communications skills
  • Ability to perform well both autonomously and as part of a team
  • Fundraising experience: proposal writing, commercial enterprise and/or campaign development
  • Strong analytical mind-set and creative and flexible approach to problem solving
  • Ability to motivate and guide staff particularly in non-line-management relationships
  • Understanding of the nature conservation sector is considered an advantage
  • Willingness to travel to Partners and Partnership Meetings
  • Fluency in English. Knowledge of other languages spoken in the region is considered an advantage
  • High standard of computer literacy (MS Office, Internet)
