The Center for Biological Diversity seeks a dynamic, experienced, creative
and media-savvy communicator for our work on the threats to wildlife and
the environment from human population pressure and overconsumption. The
Center is the only environmental group in the United States with a full-time
program focusing on these issues. Our highly motivated Population and Sustainability
team uses cutting-edge communications and campaigns to highlight unsustainable
human population growth, as well as the impacts that food production (particularly
meat and the use of pesticides) and energy development have on people, wildlife
and the planet.

The Media Specialist will produce high-impact communications on every platform
aimed at steering the national conversation on these critical issues — including
pursuing media stories, op-eds, editorials and creative media products that
provoke, entice and generate discussion and action. The Center is already
a national leader on issues involving population and sustainability through
creative campaigns like our Endangered Species Condoms project and Take
Extinction Off Your Plate. Our aim is to take our population and sustainability
program to the next level with high-impact media that reaches new audiences,
decision-makers and the next generation of activists.

This position reports directly to the communications director and works
closely with our Communications program, population and sustainability director
and the staff of our Population and Sustainability program.

Write compelling press releases, white papers, story pitches, blog posts,
factsheets, op-eds and other material.

Heighten public knowledge of issues surrounding population and sustainability,
including personal choices and national policy debates.

Work closely with Communications and Population and Sustainability staff
to develop and execute long-term and near-term strategic communications
plans.

Manage, plan and help execute rapid response to breaking news.

Organize and execute editorial drives.

Track national and international news related to population and sustainability
and seek out strategic ways to become part of the news cycle.

Cultivate media relationships, pitch stories to reporters and editorial
writers, and continually seek out new media opportunities.

Act as a public spokesperson as needed.

Integrate materials related to population and sustainability into other
Center communications.

Periodically read, research and synthesize science related to population
and sustainability for lay audience materials.

Help expand and refine the Center’s existing communications materials, including
the website and regular publications.

Provide educational and persuasive outreach to members of Congress and other
decision makers.

Assist with outreach to the Center’s 900,000-plus supporters and activists.

Identify and act on political opportunities, especially in the media, to
shift the national debate in our favor.

Requirements:

Proven ability to produce clear, concise, persuasive and powerful writing
on tight deadlines.

Seasoned news judgment and solid understanding of compelling media narratives.

A knack for finding creative, sometimes fun ways to communicate serious
issues.

Exceptional writing, editing and verbal skills.

A working knowledge of Population and Sustainability issues and politics.

An understanding of media cycles and the ability to consistently work with
them.

The ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
