The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) works to safeguard the world’s seafood supply by promoting the best environmental choice in seafood through the use of its logo. We celebrate, promote and add value to sustainable fisheries. Through the leadership of our partners, we help create market incentives to encourage other fisheries to improve the way they fish the oceans. Over 300 fisheries around the world, landing 12 % of the annual global harvest, are now engaged at some stage of the MSC’s independent assessment process. MSC certified and labelled seafood products are now available in around 100 countries.

Information on the role

The Marine Stewardship Council is seeking candidates for a new position, US Media Manager.   The Media Manager will lead the MSC’s engagement with US media, including both proactive and reactive management.  The successful candidate will serve as part of MSC’s Marketing and Communications team, coordinating with colleagues in North America, the Global Communications and Marketing team in London, and around the globe.

This exciting and challenging role will focus on core values – science, education and partnerships – through multimedia content to shape and influence the news agenda in line with the strategic ambitions of MSC. Using substantial experience in and understanding of the news environment, the post holder will create a high level of media and PR activity in support of the delivery of our strategy.

 Minimum qualifications include

 Degree in journalism, communications, environmental sciences, or equivalent experience.

 Significant proven experience including international exposure with a similar organization and/or journalism with a major broadcaster or publication with a demonstrable track record of leading complex integrated communication strategies

 In-depth knowledge of national and local media and experience of developing and implementing media and PR strategies.

 Good understanding of communications strategy and at the same time willing and able to implement and act as spokesperson.

 Experience developing and overseeing high profile national relationships

 Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, complimented by an ability to make clear decisions and informed judgements when identifying opportunities for media stories and building relationships.

 Proven successful experience writing  and editing different types of news releases, articles, presentations, speeches, brochures, annual report as well as pieces for the company’s online channels (short messages for MSC’s website, blog entries and similar).

 Experience working with and developing digital, print and other communication channels; thorough digital understanding across all channels. Success leading diverse integrated media functions.

Comprehension of web and social analytics. 

Demonstrated excellence in spoken and written communication in the English language essential, and in Spanish highly desirable.

 Position will be based in Washington D.C., and will report to the Seattle-based Senior Marketing & Communications Manager.
