Description

Job Title: Media Assistant
    
Department: Communications

Location: Washington, D.C.
    
Reports to:
 National Press Secretary, WDC
 
Context: Plans, coordinates, and executes media strategies for assigned national level issues and/or political campaigns. Provides added support for Media team members working on specific campaigns.
    
Scope: Works closely with National Press Secretary and other Communications staff to plan and carry out communications strategies. Researches and prepares reports for release to media, assists with placement of advertising, organizes and coordinates press conferences and other media events, tracks reports, compiles data, and drafts messages, talking points, press releases, and writes and designs other materials for use with internal audiences, including PowerPoint presentations, quarterly and annual reports, and survey briefings.
    
Job Activities:
    
1. Performs research and analysis using a variety of resources and working closely with the National Press Secretary to craft appropriate media messages, draft press releases, opinion editorials, and other materials.
    
2. In cooperation with issue teams and media team members, helps plan, organize, and coordinate press conferences and other media events.
    
3. Tracks media coverage and performs media analysis for various issues and campaigns.
    
4. Identifies media opportunities and strategic responses to positions of politicians, institutions, or groups for release in traditional media, social media, blogs, and other outlets.
    
5. Fields calls from reporters, bloggers, and other members of the media, working with National Press Secretary to direct media inquiries.
    
6. Pitches stories to reporters, bloggers, editors, and editorial boards.
    
7. Trains and coaches staff and volunteers in media skills; staffs principals at media events when needed.
    
8. Maintains and strengthens existing media lists, pulls targeted media lists as needed, and builds media lists in anticipation of team and campaign needs.

9. Researches, writes, and designs materials for internal communications needs, including PowerPoint presentations and internal reports. 

10. Maintains and distributes list of department wide subscriptions and login credentials as needed. 

11. Oversees student interns.

12. Performs administrative procedures and miscellaneous duties as assigned.  

Knowledge and Skills:
    
-- B.A. degree in communications, journalism, or a closely related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.    

-- Excellent writing and communications skills.

-- Public speaking ability.

-- Knowledge of environmental issues and/or national politics preferred.

-- Ability to work cooperatively and interact effectively with staff, volunteers, the public, and members of the media.

-- Ability to meet quick deadlines and prioritize multiple projects.

-- Able to travel occasionally as required.


This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and John Muir Alliance.
