Blue Marine is seeking a Media and Education Coordinator to help deliver the Convex Seascape Survey and communicate key findings to the public. The seascape is the ultimate sink for carbon emissions and, in a time of climate emergency, could be an immense ally in efforts to slow runaway warming. But many fundamental questions remain unknown. The Convex Seascape Survey is a major five-year scientific programme in collaboration with Blue Marine and the University of Exeter, and numerous partner institutions.

Salary: £28,000 per annum

Contract: Fixed term to cover the 5 year Convex Seascape Survey project

Hours: Full- time, Monday – Friday, 9am - 6pm

Location: Somerset House (London) or flexible with some time expected in the London office

Reporting to: Head of Communications

Role & Responsibilities:

Media

  • Work closely with the Programme Manager to ensure the smooth flow and development of the Convex Seascape Survey media and education deliverables.
  • Help commission and work closely with Blue Marine’s chosen third party to manage the development and design of the digital platform, which will host the science, the education (see below) and the public communication elements of the project. This will include supplying content to and guiding the partnering digital agency.
  • Work closely with expedition media teams to commission asset that can be repurposed for a variety of outputs.
  • Oversee development of educational and media assets, including but not limited to developing social media assets and infographics for each phase of the project.
  • Nurture press relationships for the project and its outputs.
  • Arrange and manage press events and junkets for media communications.
  • Develop and manage messaging for social media.
  • Track and analyse all communication outputs about the project.
  • Arrange and assimilate science, research, assets and workflows.

Education

  • Lead the development of the education programme for the Convex Seascape Survey project.
  • Work with the Blue Media team to ensure assets are collected and created with educational outcomes in mind.
  • Work with Blue Marine’s chosen third-party educational provider to build educational materials and develop a live, online outreach programme. The programme will include concepts such as:
    • How the ocean helps to stabilize our climate
    • How ocean health is being impacted by increasing temperatures
    • Blue carbon habitats
    • General ocean-climate science and topics relevant to marine conservation
    • Supporting Blue Marine’s wider Media & Communications team with promoting the outreach programme across social media and/or and public/online events.
    • Develop and design educational presentations relevant to the Seascape Survey project.

Skills and experience required:

Essential:

  • Relevant qualification/s
  • Strong understanding of effective conservation communication and education 
    • Relevant experience within a similar position (e.g. conservation communication, outreach, science education)
    • Experience in social media strategic messaging and analysis.
    • Personable and confident personality
    • Ability to manage many moving elements of a project
    • Management of budgets
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Confident presentation and public-speaking skills
    • Valid driver’s licence
    • DBS (to work with young people)
    • Microsoft Office

Desirable:

  • Prior experience in marine conservation communication
  • Prior experience in marine outreach and education 
  • Prior experience working with children/students 
  • Familiarity with UK curricula
  • Experience using media editing software and InDesign (or other graphics software) 
  • Knowledge of project monitoring and evaluation.
