POSITION SUMMARY
The Iowa Program is seeking a Conservation Practitioner to work closely with staff from The Conservancy, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation to promote beneficial conservation practices, as well as investigate the linkage of sinkholes to Algific Talus Slopes, a rare plant and animal community found only in the Driftless Region of northeast Iowa. Further, this position will engage in surveys for the Federally endangered Northern Monkshood and Pleistocene Snails, and assist with land stewardship activities such as invasive species removal and monitoring.  This position offers excellent career experience, allowing the successful applicant to work closely with conservation non-profits, landowners as well as state and federal conservation agencies in scenic northeast Iowa.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Conservation Practitioner II participates in preserve operations, management and monitoring.  Although the position will be funded by The Nature Conservancy, most day to day activities will be conducted under the direction of biologists at the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and the Driftless Area National Wildlife Refuge (DANWR) (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service).  Office location will be at the DANWR office in McGregor, Iowa.  Field work will take place throughout northeast Iowa at preserves owned by the Conservancy, US Fish and Wildlife Service,  IDNR, Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation and on private lands.  The position may include one or more of the following functions:
• Remove exotic species and/or species monitoring, especially garlic mustard control
• Field truth sinkhole mapping. Create and maintain database of sinkhole ownership information
• Educated landowners about algific talus slopes, karst topography and their impact on water quality and biodiversity of northeast Iowa
• Maintain tools and equipment
• Educate local landowners about their options for protecting private lands (e.g. the conservation reserve program, conservation easements, stewardship, etc.)
• Conduct basic assessments of conservation easements, including boundary inspections, invasive species monitoring, and/or monitoring of threatened or endangered species.
• Assist biologists with evaluation of properties under consideration for protection through conservation easement
• Work with biologists from IDNR, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Conservancy to monitor conditions at algific talus slopes, including temperature monitoring and surveys for endangered and threatened species such as the Iowa Pleistocene Snail and the Northern monkshood.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• High school diploma and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management. 
• Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
• Experience operating various types of equipment.
• Experience performing physical work.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
Required Knowledge and Skills:
• Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.  Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete preserve management activities.
• Basic PC familiarity, including knowledge of basic word processing systems and GIS in order to maintain preserve records.
• Ability to operate or undergo training to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.; GPS units; lawn mower, chainsaw, two-way radio, etc)
• Ability to follow instructions from colleagues
• Ability to perform physical work, sometime under adverse conditions or in inclement weather
SALARY INFORMATION
$13.00 per hour
