POSITION SUMMARY

The Matador Ranch Stewardship Ecologist supports science and stewardship projects on the 60,000-acre Matador Ranch and surrounding lands of cooperating landowners in north central Montana.   He/she is responsible for collecting data on wildlife species, including Greater Sage-grouse, grassland birds, and black-tailed prairie dogs, as well as, native plant communities and invasive species.  The Stewardship Ecologist will also assist with land management projects on the Matador, including riparian restoration, fence repair and maintenance of other ranching-related infrastructure, invasive species management, maintenance of facilities and equipment, and monitoring use during the hunting season.  Housing is provided and is a requirement of the position. This position requires frequent interaction with landowners, partners, and staff, and he/she must be able to maintain positive relationships in a rural setting.  This position is part of the Conservancy’s Northern Montana Prairie Program and works with the Matador Ranch Operations Manager, Montana Land Steward and GIS Assistant, Director of Science, other seasonal staff, and contractors.  This position is supervised by the Montana Land Steward and GIS Assistant and does not supervise any staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

This position participates in scientific data collection and land management actions.  This may include one or more of the following functions:

  • Independently collects data on wildlife species of concern, specifically Sage-grouse, grassland birds, and prairie dogs.  Working with other staff or contractors collects data on native plant communities and invasive species.
  • Compiles, edits, and enters collected field data into a GIS or other software files.
  • Supports ranch operations by working with other staff to repair or build fences and other infrastructure, as well as, buildings, tools, and equipment.  Contributes to other ecological land management, including riparian restoration projects.
  • Ability to drive 4x4 vehicles and pull trailers.
  • Works with the Matador Ranch Operations Manager to treat exotic species and/or conduct monitoring.
  • Monitor public use during hunting season and report issues to the Matador Ranch Operations Manager.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management. 
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment.
  • Experience performing physical work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma and 3 years training in science-related field or related experience in land management preferably in range science or wildlife biology
  • Experience working in rural communities is highly preferred.  
  • Fundamental skills in use of GIS preferred.
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species, with knowledge of grassland species highly preferred.
  • Ability to collect and report scientific data through detailed notes and use of GPS and store and organize data using common software.
  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers) and use of a GPS, in order to manage and store ecological data.
  • Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.  Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required for data collection.  Knowledge of grassland birds by sight and sound highly preferred.
  • Ability to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.; GPS, ATV, pick-up, etc.) in rough terrain
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues.
  • Ability to perform physical work, sometime under adverse conditions or in inclement weather.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week) position with employment dates of March 25, 2013 - November 15, 2013.

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

This position will work in variable weather conditions, at a remote location, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions:

  • require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • present frequent possibility of injury
  • require long hours in isolated settings
  • residence on the Matador Preserve is a requirement of the position

SALARY INFORMATION
  • $12.00 per hour
