ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS |
|
The Ecologist participates in preserve operations, maintenance and management. This may include one or more of the following functions: • Collect ecological data on species of concern. • Removes exotic species and/or species monitoring. • Contributes to grazing management through repair or construction of fences, water tanks, and other infrastructure. Collects data on the condition of ranch infrastructure and grazing utilization levels. • Maintains building, tools, and equipment. |

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS |
|
• High school diploma and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management. • Experience recognizing plant and animal species. • Experience operating various types of scientific and land management equipment. • Experience performing physical work. |

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION |
|
The Matador Ranch Stewardship Ecologist (Ecologist) in Montana is primarily responsible for assisting in land management and collection of data on the 60,000-acre Matador Ranch. This position requires frequent interaction with landowners, partners, and staff, and the Ecologist must be able to maintain positive relationships in a rural setting. This position works with the Glaciated Plains Land Steward and contractors to collect and manage data for grassland birds, vegetative data associated with grassland birds, livestock utilization of herbage, and invasive plant species. Additionally, at least half of the time will be spent completing ranch management projects, including fence repair and removal, irrigation and maintenance of irrigation systems, invasive species management, and maintenance of ranching-associated facilities and equipment. This position will also collect data related to land management. Housing is provided and is a requirement of the position.
The Ecologist will work in variable weather conditions, at a remote location, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions: • require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain • present frequent possibility of injury • require long hours in isolated settings |

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."
