Background
The Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) is the first grassroots, nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to fighting global warming in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Our mission is to build and mobilize a powerful grassroots movement in this unique region that surrounds our nation’s capital to call for state, national and international policies that will put us on a path to climate stability.

CCAN takes on the region’s worst climate polluters and fights for the most effective clean energy policies. We are seeking an experienced individual to head up our Maryland-based state and federal campaign efforts.  Applicants should be as excited about delving into the details of a state or federal energy bill as they are to pound the pavement alongside our grassroots organizers.

CCAN boasts an energetic, talented team with an excellent track record of getting things done, both in the statehouse and in Congress. With the help of our 30,000 members in Maryland, we have been a leading organization in the state’s major clean-energy victories, such as the most recent statewide carbon cap legislation; the Clean Cars Act; and the Healthy Air Act. We are seeking a new state director who is ready to jump right in and help us continue Maryland’s role as a national climate change leader.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Field: Manage the grassroots, grass-top, and various coalition organizing associated with CCAN’s Maryland-based campaign.
  • Policy: Develop expertise around MD state-level climate and energy policies as well as federal climate change policies moving through Congress. Help to craft state-level policies to address our priority campaigns.
  • Staff management: Provide oversight for CCAN’s field staff in Maryland.
  • Communications: Work with campaign and communications staff to develop campaign materials, action alerts and website content.

Qualifications

  • 2-5 years of issue-based campaign management experience, though those with comparable electoral management experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Self-driven and able to effectively multi-task.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Previous staff management experience required; comparable volunteer management would be considered.
  • Ability to work well in a team setting.

Salary and Location
Salary is commensurate with the selected candidate’s experience and skill level, ranging from $35,000 - $45,000. CCAN offers a competitive benefits package, including health and dental insurance and four weeks of paid vacation.

The Maryland State Director position is located in CCAN’s main office in Takoma Park, MD.
