Job Purpose

We’re Global Generation, and we’re on the lookout for a Marketing and Social Media Intern to help us in an exciting time of growth, in which our garden and café are increasingly opening up to the public.  In this role, you will help position the Skip Garden and its Café in a changing King’s Cross as a different and quirky space to visit, hang out, engage with others in the local community and eat amazing seasonal food.

Organisational Context

Global Generation has an established network of urban food-growing sites in King’s Cross, of which the Skip Garden is the ‘mothership’.  Our work is focused on the development of the whole person, providing support for young people to become catalysts for change in their communities.  We integrate values-based reflective learning into practical sessions, enabling young people to grow themselves, grow relationships and grow a new vision for the future.

The food we grow gets used in our Skip Garden Café’s kitchen - a transformed portable cabin - involving local young people and local businesses.  Young people also have the opportunity to work alongside local business employees in the development of food-growing sites, gain work experience opportunities and set up shared initiatives such as the Honey Club, a social enterprise founded by Global Generation, a group of Generators, and staff from branding agency Wolff Olins.

Global Generation is 10 years old this year; our garden and café are now much more open to the public, and we are planning to rebrand and change our website to reflect this.  We are looking for a Marketing and Social Media Intern who will be able to work closely with the rest of the team and help us get the Skip Garden and Café to the next level – help us promote what we do and increase the number of visitors we get to our magical garden in the middle of the King’s Cross regeneration site.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Increase our presence on social networking sites – such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram

  • Increase our following by regularly updating social media sites and interacting with our members

  • Promote the Skip Garden and Café to as large an audience as possible using different marketing means – such as social media, leaflets, updating our website, involving local businesses, networking and increasing the Skip Garden’s presence with local organisations such as Central Saint Martins

  • Create and edit photos and videos at Skip Garden events and workshops, sharing both internally and externally

Essential Skills and Experience

This would be an ideal role for a recent graduate from a Marketing discipline, with:

  • Experience in developing a marketing plan and implementing it

  • Strong technical ability in all social media tools

  • Creative thinking, flexibility and a positive attitude

  • The ability to work independently as well as with other people

  • Empathy with  Global Generation’s ethos and interest in values-based learning

  • Interest in working with young people and the natural environment

Desirable

  • Photography and/or video production experience

Support you will get in the role

  • Work closely with the Global Generation Programmes team (kitchen, garden and youth programmes) to be immersed in the work in order to communicate what we do externally

  • Take part in a hackathon with Karmarama, including experts in PR, social media, traditional advertising and strategists around 'How can the Skip Garden be the next big pop up space?' and then taking a lead in implementing the ideas

  • Mentored by Karmarama to give specific social media support. This will involved an initial half day session to develop a plan, and then 4 hours a month to be used at intern’s discretion.

Time Commitment: Ideally, you will be happy to work with us three days per week (Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays) for a minimum of three months and up to six months.

Expenses: We will pay you £10 per day to cover your travel expenses and you’d always share a home-cooked lunch with the rest of the team

Start Date: Wednesday, 14 May 2014

How to Apply: Please email your CV and a covering letter to jobs@globalgeneration.org.uk by 6pm on Tuesday, 29th April.
