Change Agents UK is pleased to be working with Opportunity Peterborough and University Centre Peterborough to deliver the Peterborough Graduate Scheme, which forms part of the Peterborough DNA programme. This is one of 12 roles on the Peterborough Graduate Scheme (PGS).

Background

The Green Backyard is a registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation (no.1155534) and Peterborough’s only formally recognised community asset.

A vibrant community growing project in the heart of Peterborough that was established in 2009, which is run entirely by volunteers. From this urban space, we have transformed a once derelict former allotment site into a beautiful and productive community garden that is open to everyone. We are passionate about sustainability and work to raise awareness of environmental issues by involving the community in informative, practical demonstrations and workshops. We work with many different individuals and groups, as well as various schools, businesses and other organisations from across Peterborough and beyond.

This vibrant and fluid organisation has established itself as the leading example of a sustainable community project in Peterborough, with a growing regional and national reputation, and the graduate will be in a unique position to support The Green Backyard in meeting its charitable objectives as it continues to grow its education, local food and support programme.

Objective

The post relates to creating a positive image of The Green Backyard in the minds of local people and businesses, thus encouraging community engagement with the both the project and local sustainability issues. The graduate will also be provided with the opportunity to identify and secure new project opportunities and income streams. This will be measured by the increased number of people who are using the services provided by The Green Backyard, the scope of the new funding opportunities identified and the amount of project funding secured.

Benefits of this opportunity

This a great opportunity for a graduate with public relations and marketing skills and an entrepreneurial mindset to make a positive impact on the future success of a registered charity. It will provide the graduate with the room and support to apply their knowledge to help shape marketing and PR strategy, alongside experience of project development, identifying fundraising possibilities and bid writing. The graduate will also gain experience of working with a talented and dedicated team of volunteers with a can do attitude, working to nurture and sustain an important community led project based upon the principles of a more resilient, sustainable and happier lifestyle. Acting as a key stakeholder they will be supporting Peterborough in its aspiration to create the UK’s Environment Capital. They will be looking to promote one planet living as set out in the Environment Capital objectives.

Future employment potential

The graduate will gain essential experience and knowledge of how a charity is motivated and run as well as learning key and transferable skills. The extensive networking and relationship building which will run as a thread throughout the scheme will ensure that the graduate is well equipped to find employment in one of the city’s many environment job opportunities at the end of the placement.
