Description

Bird Studies Canada (BSC) - Atlantic Region is seeking an Editorial Assistant to assist with various aspects of the development and production of the publication of the second Maritimes Breeding Bird Atlas as a hard copy book and web-based publication. The Maritimes Breeding Bird Atlas (www.mba-aom.ca) is a region-wide multi-stakeholder project to determine the distribution and abundance of all bird species breeding in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

The Editorial Assistant will work closely with Atlas Coordinator and the Atlas Publication Sub-committee to help ensure the successful production of final Atlas products (website and hard-copy publication). Primary responsibilities will include: reviewing written materials, fact checking, proof-reading, and assisting with document management during the writing, reviewing and editing stages of the final Atlas production. The preferred candidate will help provide logistical support to writers and editors through each of these stages. The Editorial Assistant will also be involved in some data summary, analysis, verification and review. In addition, the Editorial Assistant will assist in developing and delivering outreach products to communicate key Atlas information to bird conservation stakeholders in the Maritimes

The Editorial Assistant should hold a B.Sc. or M.Sc. in biology or a related field and have relevant work experience. The position requires demonstrated communication skills (written and verbal); a strong attention to detail; ability to meet deadlines; excellent organizational skills; computer skills (familiarity with MS Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and FrontPage); independence, enthusiasm and initiative; and an appreciable knowledge of Maritime birds. Familiarity with database management (e.g., MS SQL Server) and the ability to conduct data analyses using statistical software (e.g., R) are very strong assets. Preference will be given to candidates who can communicate in both English and French.

Salary range is $2500 to $3000 per month, commensurate with experience and funding, plus benefits. This is a contractual position for 6-8 months with possibility for renewal pending funding and performance

Applicants should submit a cover letter, resume, two references, and a brief writing sample to Kate Bredin, Maritimes Breeding Bird Atlas Coordinator, at: kbredin@birdscanada.org by 5:00 pm (Atlantic Time) on Monday 18 July 2011.

While Bird Studies Canada thanks all applicants, only those chosen for an interview will be contacted.
