GRID-Arendal is developing a global marine initiative with four main project areas: climate change adaptation, global assessment of the deep oceans, national marine expertise capacity building and support to UNEP’s marine programme. This initiative builds on the successful UNEP Shelf Programme, which supports developing states with data and capacity building for the extension of their continental shelf under the United Nation Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Jointly these programmes have an overarching focus on marine management, especially in the support of developing states and small island developing states. The marine specialist will be working with a small highly motivated international team in the further development and implementation of the marine programme and reporting directly to the programme manager. The position is based at GRID-Arendal headquarter in Arendal, Norway. GRID-Arendal is a project funded organisation. The successful candidate will have a higher degree in marine ecology, oceanography or interdisciplinary marine studies involving integrated environmental management and policy in the marine environment with at least 5 years post degree experience in one or more of the main project areas. Particular expertise in seafloor processes and benthic ecosystems in the deep ocean is highly desirable. The position does not relate to fisheries management, nor involve field work or fundamental scientific research.
