ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
|
|
The Marine Scientist II provides technical and scientific support and leadership for marine conservation & social science initiatives with a focus on spatial analyses in (i) climate and disaster risk reduction and (ii) marine spatial planning. Independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard methods and techniques. This may include one or more of the following functions:
- Collects and manages spatial data on ecological and social risk and vulnerability
- Conducts scientific surveys (e.g., global meta-analyses on hazard mitigation benefits of coastal habitats) and research (e.g., role of marshes & dunes in reducing inundation post-hurricane Sandy), records data, writes project reports and develops proposals
- Delivers and support the development of tools particularly around Coastal Resilience, Marine InVest, Marine Planner
- Delivers and supports the development of new risk indicators such as World Risk Index and Coasts at Risk.
- Helps develop adaptive management plans, develops conceptual models, and identifies and designs strategies in the interface between conservation, risk reduction and fisheries strategies
- Develops and defines methodologies and criteria for conservation and risk reduction planning
- Administers, coordinates, and develops projects in a conservation region with a current focus in the Gulf of Mexico, Meso-American Reef , Grenadine Banks and NE US.
The position will be based in one of the Global Marine Team’s core offices; preferably Seattle, Santa Cruz or Miami with one of our Marine Science and Planning leaders. TNC

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
|
|
- Graduate degree in science-related field and 2 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in leading and/or working with cross-functional teams
- Experience synthesizing, interpreting and communicating scientific information and preparing reports on findings.
- Peer reviewed publication record.
- Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite Software.
- Experience working and communicating with a diverse group of people.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate degree in science-related field and 2-4 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of species, natural communities, ecosystems, ecosystem processes and their conservation needs.
- Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, climate science, disaster risk reduction and marine planning.
- Ability to collect, manipulate, analyze, and interpret spatial and scientific data and prepare reports of findings.
- Ability to synthesize, interpret and communicate scientific information to influence conservation practice.
- Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results.
- Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers) and ability to use provided computer technology to enhance the quality of work.
- Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
- Peer reviewed publication record.
- Project Management experience preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT
The Marine Scientist II may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions may:
