GL Garrad Hassan is the world's largest independent technical and engineering consultancy for renewable energy. We are the recognised global authority on onshore and offshore wind power and also serve the wave, tidal and solar sectors.

An opportunity exists in our Turbine Group for a Marine Renewables Energy Engineer (Wave and Tidal). The Marine Renewables Energy Engineer (Wave and Tidal) position is available to be based in any of our four USA offices.

The Engineer for Wave and Tidal Energy will be responsible for a wide range of engineering duties in support of the GL GH Marine Renewables team, and potentially other areas as the need may arise.

The Marine Renewables team currently offers a range of services which include technical due diligence, concept design, hydrodynamic modeling, installation and site data analysis. Working as part of the team, you will be required to work autonomously on a range of these activities, and take responsibility for business development in North America.  Commercial projects have durations from a few weeks to several months although there are other projects with significant ongoing R&D activity with much longer timeframes.

The position will be based in one of the GL GH United States offices although most work directions will come from the UK offices.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Business development in North America markets for marine renewables;
  • Conduct detailed technical review and independent assessment of marine renewable manufacturers and device developers including:
    • Review design and optimization of layouts for wave/tidal energy farms;
    • Technology reviews for investors;
    • Review detailed drawing and specifications
    • Review quality processes;
  • Use software tools to provide loading and performance predictions for wave/tidal energy devices operating in isolation and in arrays;
  • Support device developers in the assessment of new concepts, provision of loading and performance calculations, and analysis of measured data;
  • Resource studies for policy makers and other strategic stakeholders;
  • Write detailed reports;
  • Evaluate proposals and make recommendations for technical issues that arise;
  • Lead or participate in meetings and conference calls with developers, investors, lenders, and engineers regarding technical reviews and issues:
    • Participate in relevant industry groups  in order to increase knowledge of technical, standards, and regulatory issues; and
    • Represent GL GH in industry forums.

The Marine Renewables Engineer will be responsible for business development of the North American Marine Renewables market supporting multiple projects simultaneously with the ability to independently manage own priorities and workload, with the flexibility to adapt to new challenges with confidence.  With minimal direction, the position will be responsible for identifying and resolving technical issues with Clients; and for addressing concerns and issues of the Client related to the project, placing a premium on the Client's time

The position will possess an awareness of general marine renewables design knowledge and technical issues.

The position will also require the ability to perform the engineering task of developing and evaluating concepts for the manufacturer or device developer.  Detailed knowledge of, or ability to deduce, such technical details without technical specialist assistance is not required.  However, the successful candidate must be able to grasp such details and articulate them to lay persons.
