Description

JNCC are seeking an environmental scientist to for our Aberdeen office to support JNCC’s diverse work programme on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). JNCC provide specialist technical advice to the UK Administrations and Public Authorities on MPAs in UK offshore waters to help them meet international obligations and national objectives for establishing well-managed networks of MPAs. The MPA Support Officer role will contribute to our expanding work on raising public awareness on offshore MPAs with our internal and external customers (most notably the maintenance and development of JNCC’s Site Information Centres), maintaining the flow of information on offshore MPAs between our Marine Evidence & MPA Programmes, supporting ongoing liaison with Governments around offshore MPA designations, and more general support to the work of JNCC’s MPA Programme (notably improving the provision of conservation advice on offshore MPAs).

We are seeking someone with experience in using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software in the management and analysis of biophysical and human activities data, a degree or equivalent qualification in an environmental science (preferably marine), and experience of managing and ensuring the quality assurance of large-scale datasets. Knowledge of the UK’s marine biodiversity and MPA policy and practice is desirable.
