Location:  Diani, Kenya, with frequent travel to project sites in Kenya, Zanzibar and Pemba Island

Fauna & Flora International (FFI) protects threatened species and ecosystems worldwide, choosing solutions that are sustainable, based on sound science and take account of human needs. Operating in more than 40 countries worldwide, mainly in the developing world, FFI saves species from extinction and habitats from destruction, whilst improving the livelihoods of local people. Founded in 1903, FFI is the world’s longest established international conservation body and a registered charity.

Working closely with local partners, FFI’s Africa Programme currently operates in 14 countries in West, Central, East and Southern Africa, and is implementing a range of projects focused on species and habitat conservation, biodiversity planning, protected area management, institutional development and capacity building, sustainable use and community-focused wildlife management initiatives. FFI’s East Africa office was established to support the development and implementation of projects within Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. These diverse projects support the management and conservation of rangelands, fisheries, forests as well as other key biodiversity habitats and species.

The East Africa Marine Programme is currently focused on the Kenyan coast using a marine conservancy model in the north coast from the Lower Tana Delta to Kiwayu and Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs) in the south coast from Funzi to Vanga. The programme has been very effective at empowering local communities to sustainably manage their resources and to enhance their local livelihoods. It is expected that this programme will expand into Tanzania with a focus on the Pemba Channel so as to enhance ecological connectivity and address various trans-boundary issues.

We are offering a unique opportunity to support the design and delivery of our marine programme in East Africa. The East Africa Marine Programme Manager will play an important role within the Africa team, providing leadership for the identification and development of new opportunities for marine interventions, focused initially in Tanzania (Pemba channel) (70% of time).

The candidate will work closely with NGO partners, local government and coastal communities in Tanzania, with short term inputs from FFI and external advisers, to design and advance new opportunities for locally-led conservation and participatory marine resource governance (e.g. using the Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA) model), livelihoods enhancement and diversification (through sustainable small-scale fisheries and SME/market development), and advocacy to improve policy and practices in marine ecosystems. 

The post-holder will also provide technical support to existing marine projects on the north and south coast of Kenya (30% of time), backstopping the effective management and reporting of donor funds, and acting as a focal point for FFI’s local partners.

We are looking for someone with a comprehensive working knowledge of approaches to marine conservation (particularly those listed above), and a proven track record of providing technical inputs to support project delivery and innovative project design. The post-holder must have a strong project management and fundraising background, have experience in building and maintaining positive relationships, and be able to communicate with confidence and credibility to a range of audiences.
