The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is an independent, non-profit organization founded to provide first-rate, unbiased research along with technical and scientific analysis to environmental regulators. The ICCT seeks a highly committed, self-motivated person to join us as a full-time Researcher in the Marine Program in our Washington, DC office. This position will support maritime research on international vessel efficiency and air pollution. The successful applicant will be confortable conducting and communicating the results of policy-relevant quantitative analyses to stakeholders to support a variety of ongoing ICCT projects as well as help analyze air emissions from marine vessels and evaluate the potential effectiveness of emissions control strategies.

Position Responsibilities

  • Analyze and integrate information about marine vessel operations, emissions, and control strategies into policy-relevant information;
  • Support the development of global and port-based emission inventories;
  • Research and evaluate best practices for emissions reductions for marine vessels;
  • Evaluate the economic and environmental tradeoffs of emission reduction strategies
  • Contribute to or lead development of models and quantitative tools in areas of expertise;
  • Synthesize and present technical data into policy-relevant documents, memos, and working papers for both technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Engage effectively with external stakeholders including government officials, NGO’s, academic experts or businesses to build trust and partnerships;
  • Organize briefings, workshops, invite-only meetings and other outreach activities;
  • Contribute to identifying funding sources, developing proposals; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Ph.D. or Master’s degree in environmental science, environmental policy, engineering, or transportation-related field or other relevant subject;
  • Experience researching transportation emissions and control strategies;
  • Experience conducting quantitative policy analysis;
  • Experience in maritime data collection, ship emissions, port operations, maritime law and policy, international relations or similar strongly preferred;
  • Superior written and verbal communications skills, plus good interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent quantitative, analytical, and research skills combined with strategic problem-solving and great organizational skills;
  • Good working understanding of marine engineering, maritime policy, and/or air quality issues;
  • Excellent proficiency with MS Excel, and good proficiency with MS Access, Word and PowerPoint;
  • Experience in managing and analyzing large datasets; and
  • ArcMap/spatial analysis capabilities are preferred.

Position Details

This is an immediate opening. The ICCT offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience plus an excellent benefits package and a transportation subsidy.  The preferred location for this position is Washington, DC, but for the right candidate locating the position in San Francisco, CA may be considered.
