Marine Program Fellow

The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) has an immediate opening for a Fellow in its Washington, DC office to work in our marine program. The position will support maritime research on international vessel efficiency and pollutant emissions. The fellow will work to integrate information about vessel operations, in the form of satellite AIS data, with research on air pollution to refine global marine inventories for particulate matter (PM), black carbon (BC), and carbon dioxide. This position will directly support a grant from the Climate and Clean Air Coalition Heavy Duty Diesel Initiative marine black carbon research program and a new project to improve the operational efficiency of international vessels.

Working under the direction of the marine program director and other marine staff, the fellow will:

- Compile vessel positional data (AIS) in support of vessel emissions inventories

- Compile key ship types and associated engine types to inform inventory calculations

- Research and evaluate best practices for emissions reductions for vessels and ports

The successful applicant may also be asked to contribute to other projects that work toward the broader mission of the ICCT. This unique ICCT position provides an excellent opportunity for an early-career researcher to learn about opportunities to reduce emissions and petroleum use from marine vessels, and about how to work in a dynamic, policy-oriented setting.

Qualifications

  • A strong technical background, with a Masters degree or equivalent experience in engineering, environmental science, or transportation-related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Excellent quantitative, analytical, and research skills.
  • Experience with MS Excel, and proficiency with MS Word and PowerPoint, are required.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Access or other similar database software is required.
  • Advanced programming skills desired.
  • Familiarity with AIS data and ArcMap/spatial analysis capabilities is highly preferred.
  • A good working understanding of marine engineering, maritime policy, and/or air quality issues is desirable.
  • The ideal candidate will be highly organized, self-directed, and strategic in problem solving.
  • Familiarity with efficiency technology and emissions control for other vehicles is desirable.

Position Details

The successful applicant is expected to work full-time for 12 to 18 months from the ICCT’s Washington, DC office. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
