Marine Policy Officer

Seas At Risk (SAR) is an umbrella organisation of environmental NGOs from across Europe that promotes ambitious policies for marine protection at European and international level. We represent 30 member organisations in 16 different EU Member States. The SAR Secretariat comprises 7 staff members, 5 of whom are working from the Brussels office. We are a diverse team but share a passion for the sea. We are currently working on issues as diverse as fisheries, aquaculture, greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, marine litter and EU-level marine environment policies.

Purpose of the job

SAR is seeking a marine policy officer to develop and implement its EU advocacy work on the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and marine protected areas.

Main responsibilities

• Develop and implement SAR’s work on the Marine Strategy Framework Directive
• Develop and implement SAR’s work on marine protected areas (this is a new work area)
• Contribute to other SAR project areas when needed
• Coordinate related work across NGOs (SAR members and others)
• Draft position papers, policy briefings and reports and communicate results
• Organise workshops and events
• Liaise with EU institutions and other international organisations, as well as with national authorities, stakeholders and scientists
• Participate in related policy fora
• Raise funds, write grant proposals, report to funders
• Ensure effective project management, including budget management

Qualification, experience, knowledge

• At least a master’s degree in a related subject
• Minimum three years’ experience with related projects
• Good insight in functioning of the EU institutions
• Good knowledge of MPA designation and management processes and legal requirements
• Good knowledge of MSFD and other EU policies and legislation on marine environment
• Excellent spoken and written English; knowledge of other languages an asset.
