Description

About Us:

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

Overview:

ZSL is looking for an experienced coordinator to join its Marine and Freshwater Team. The successful candidate will coordinate a brand new collaborative project that, with multiple partners, will deliver an innovative London-wide campaign to stop the use of single-use plastic water bottles in London. Using the simple symbol of a plastic water bottle, the project aims to connect people to the ocean and change their perceptions, values and behaviour, reducing the number of plastic bottles entering the ocean.

The coordinator will be responsible for supporting and driving the delivery of this new project and associated campaign, including background research, online communications, delivering events and liaising with partners and stakeholders. They will be responsible for managing logistical, administrative, financial and reporting requirements for this project, including those arising from collaborative arrangements between ZSL and partner organisations.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with project partners to support the development of strategies and work plans, and drive their effective delivery.
  • Develop relationships, and where appropriate build new partnerships with external stakeholders both in the UK and internationally.
  • Organise internal and external meetings, workshops and events.
  • Coordinate and deliver the digital outputs of the project.
  • Support the production of science-based policy positions.
  • Support the project manager in the production of promotional materials, monthly reports and the compilation of technical and financial reports to partners and donors.

Person Specification:

  • BSc/BA in a relevant subject or equivalent qualification or relevant work experience.
  • Prior experience in coordinating conservation or development projects with a number of partner organisations involved.
  • Knowledge and understanding of environmental and political campaign processes and standards.
  • Knowledge and understanding of marine conservation science and policy, in particular relating to marine pollution.
  • Knowledge of corporate social responsibility and/ or sustainability in the context of business and biodiversity.
  • Excellent communication skills, especially the ability to communicate complex ideas in an articulate and confident way and to adapt language to varied audiences.
  • Ability to effectively build and develop relationships with a wide range of cross-sectoral people and representatives.

Please note: This is a full-time, 1 year fixed-term contract with the possibility of a 1 year extension dependent on project funding, The post holder will be based primarily at the ZSL main offices in London, Regents Park, but may occasionally be required to travel to collaborators based elsewhere in London and the UK.
