Under current circumstances we can be flexible around remote working options until such time that we are able to return to the office.

The successful candidate would then be expected to be able to work from one of these locations for the first six months of their employment. Flexible and remote working options can then be considered after this period. The post-holder may be required to attend meetings at various localities in the UK, and potentially internationally, involving overnight stays away from home.

Want to make an impact on marine sustainability? Then JNCC is the employer for you.

What is JNCC?

We’re the environment’s best kept secret. Established in 1990, we’re the UK’s statutory advisor on issues affecting the natural environment across the UK and internationally. Our primary role is advising all four Governments of the UK. With most of our work being within Government, our public profile is low but our impact is high.  Our special combination of scientific and analytical excellence with deep knowledge of how to facilitate joint working across jurisdictions allows us to deliver a much-valued service to the UK and other governments.

JNCC has been at the heart of UK marine conservation science, management and policy advice for decades, and we are proud of the UK’s record of marine protection, management and planning, which is globally recognised.  There is always room for improvement, and existing processes too often set environmental benefits in opposition to concerns about economic prosperity and jobs.  This is misleading.  For lasting prosperity there needs to be a balance between short term, single-sector or market-based gains and wider benefits to society and well-being, and with long term stewardship of our marine assets.

As marine natural capital advice specialist, you will use your skills and knowledge to identify, share and promote solutions to improve decision-making, and develop and maintain strategic relationships with our customers and partners.  You will encourage the Natural Capital approach, articulate the benefits and drive dialogue to break down some of the unnecessarily polarised positions amongst competing marine uses.

The role will work closely with a specialist in data and analysis who will gather, organise and analyse the evidence on which your work will depend.  Together, you will identify and design products and outputs to support our mission, and frame the outputs to appeal to key audiences.

One of the advantages of working for JNCC is the opportunity to collaborate with different specialisms, including for this role economics, ecology, site and wider protection, monitoring, marine industries, modelling and policy.

Who are we looking for?

Someone with good understanding of marine policy, its drivers and stakeholders, and the ability to influence attitudes through clear and engaging explanations, constructive dialogue and excellent relationship management.  Effective communication is essential.  A skilled project manager, you’ll ideally have strong experience of delivering rigorous and relevant advice in a public policy environment.

We’re small enough (c.200 staff) that you’ll know everyone by name, but big enough that we have all the skills, resources and people you’ll need to get the job done. We are flexible and welcoming, and we focus on supporting advisers with the freedom and tools they need to get their jobs done. You will benefit from our inclusive and lively workplace culture, excellent holiday and pension benefits, as well as an exciting job in a unique environment.

We will assess you against the Behaviours listed below, and the Experience and Technical requirements outlined in the Post Details.

  • Communicating and Influencing
  •   Making Effective Decisions
  •   Working Together
  •   Managing a Quality Service
  •   Seeing the Big Picture

If you successfully reach the interview stage, you will be asked to give a 10-minute presentation (details of this will be sent to candidates before interview).

The closing date is 09:00 on 10 August 2020.

Interviews are expected to take place during week commencing 24 August 2020.

To apply please visit our website at https://jncc.gov.uk/about-jncc/careers/ where you can download the Application Form, Equality & Diversity Form and Job Description, and find further information on How to apply.
