Description

ASRC Energy Services – Regulatory and Technical Services (AES-RTS) is seeking qualified individuals to work as seasonal, part-time MMOs onboard vessels in the Chukchi Sea for the 2011 open water season (approximately late July through September).

The MMO Program was developed to enable the oil and gas industry to comply with the monitoring requirements set forth by the National Marine Fisheries Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The primary purpose of the MMO Program is to ensure that the disturbance of marine mammals is minimized by oil and gas activities, and that any effects on marine mammals are documented. AES-RTS appreciates the fact that when the lives of marine mammals are safeguarded, the future of the North Slope coastal communities is, in turn, protected.

Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) Accountabilities and Specific Requirements:

-          Report directly to the onboard lead Marine Mammal Biologist.

-          Use local knowledge and Traditional Knowledge to monitor for and record sightings of marine mammals to assist the Marine Mammal Biologist.

-          Scan the immediate vicinity around vessels for the presence of marine mammals and provide verbal and written descriptions of the marine mammal sightings as required by Federal regulations.

-          Record marine mammal sightings in daily reports/logs while on geophysical, seismic, and/or barging vessels in the Chukchi Sea.

-          Operate various distance-measuring devices (e.g., reticule binoculars, Global Positioning System, and inclinometers).

-          Possess the knowledge and ability to differentiate between different whale and seal species, and to distinguish between other marine mammals as well.

-          Comply with regulatory requirements, authorizations, and agreements prescribed by the National Marine Fisheries Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

-          Demonstrate reliable and responsible performance and the ability to work successfully in a team environment.
