Job summary

Who are JNCC?

Established in 1991, we’re the UK’s statutory advisor on issues affecting the natural environment across the UK and internationally. Our primary role is advising all four Governments of the UK. We also work with private sector organisations to support decision making on the sustainable use of marine waters and natural resources around the UK. JNCC is led by the Joint Committee, which brings together members from the nature conservation bodies for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and independent members appointed by the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs under an independent Chair. Support is provided to the Committee by almost 270 people who bring together scientific and technical expertise, extensive knowledge of policy at global, European and national levels, and skills in working with other organisations. Staff are based in two main offices in Peterborough and Aberdeen.

Short Summary

JNCC are looking for a Marine Evidence Manager to join the Marine Evidence Team. You will work under the guidance of JNCC’s Marine Evidence Team Leaders, with a range of other specialists, both within JNCC and in other organisations. Using your knowledge of marine biodiversity and marine industries, you will deliver robust evidence and advice about human activities in the marine environment, and their associated pressures. You will also work with colleagues in the country nature conservation bodies (Nature Scot, Natural England, Natural Resources Wales, Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Northern Ireland) and other public bodies (e.g. MMO, Environment Agency).

Post Duties

•    Directing the development of spatial pressure layers and management of human activities data and data aggregation tools;
•    Overseeing the development and management of databases of activities, pressures and sensitivities information, working with UK partners (for example’ Feature Activity Sensitivity Tool (FeAST);
•    Disseminating marine pressures and impacts information to the UK Government, the Devolved Administrations, the country nature conservation bodies and industry stakeholders;
•    Providing advice to government departments on deep-sea mining impacts, and contribute deep-sea mining policy expertise to a NERC-funded project (SMARTEX);
•    Reviewing and quality assuring assessments of the sensitivity of marine habitats to pressures exerted by anthropogenic activities;
•    Working on international projects which have sensitivity, pressures and impacts components;
•    Contributing to the development and testing of indicators for monitoring and assessment of seabed habitats;
•    Line-managing and supervising a small team to deliver the work described above;
•    Managing contracts, including the drafting of specifications and undertaking of procurement, and;

•    Writing bids for future project opportunities related to sensitivity, pressures and impacts.


Most of the work will be office based, but there may be opportunities to participate in field surveys at sea (for up to several weeks at a time). The post-holder will be required to work with colleagues in JNCC’s Peterborough and Aberdeen offices, and may also be required to attend meetings in UK and overseas, involving overnight stays away from home.

Technical skills

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject and/or relevant recent practical work experience that provides the following knowledge, experience and behaviours
  • Knowledge and understanding of the UK’s benthic marine biodiversity and its spatial and temporal variation, ideally with an offshore focus including deep sea, and a working knowledge of the national and/or EUNIS marine habitat classification system;
  • Knowledge of marine industries, their regulation and their pressures and impacts upon UK benthic habitats and species;
  • Knowledge of data management processes and the use of databases to analyse, interpret and recognise patterns and trends in data to draw key conclusions;

Leave entitlement

JNCC annual leave allowance is 25 days per annum. After five years’ service, leave entitlement increases to 30 days per annum.

Work/life balance

JNCC will be adopting a more flexible approach to working options and, once we are able to return to working in our office locations, our people will have more flexibility about where they choose to work. The expectation is that we will be expected to work from our office base for 1 – 2 days a month as a minimum. We can provide more details at the interview and offer stages.
