Description

NIOZ, the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research is the Dutch national marine science institute and among the most renowned internationally. NIOZ acquires and communicates scientific knowledge on seas and oceans through research and education. Our research covers all disciplines pertinent to marine science and our strength is in the multidisciplinary approach. Currently, we employ some 350 scientists, lab assistants, technicians, ship’s crew and auxiliary staff. NIOZ has two locations, one situated in the south along the Oosterschelde estuary (NIOZ Yerseke), and one in the north on the barrier island of Texel (NIOZ Texel).  The open position is located at NIOZ Yerseke in the Ecosystem Studies group.

The Ecosystem Studies group works at the interface between ecology and biogeochemistry in estuarine, coastal and deep sea environments. The group’s mission is to study how ecology influences biogeochemical cycles (the ecological perspective on marine biogeochemistry) as well as how organisms and ecological interactions are affected by the biogeochemistry of their environment (the biogeochemical perspective on marine ecosystem functioning). Key research topics are biogeochemical cycling in sediment ecosystems, benthic-pelagic coupling, and stable isotope food web research.

For this department the Royal NIOZ invites applications for a full-time position as a

Marine Ecosystem Researcher

Job description:

Successful applicants are expected to have developed new, innovative research lines in the field of marine ecology and biogeochemistry, in an area that complements ongoing research within the group and which strengthens our sea and ocean-going research activities. Research should focus on food webs and/or biogeochemical cycling in marine ecosystems, with an emphasis on the impacts of global change (climate change, ocean acidification, coastal hypoxia). The successful candidate will participate in national and international research projects, and supervise graduate students and post docs. The NIOZ is an independent research institute, and so, the candidate is free from teaching obligations.

Qualifications:

We are looking for a leading international scientist, with an excellent track record, and a PhD in the earth and life sciences (biology, biogeochemistry, chemistry, oceanography).
