Living Oceans Society, through the Canada Summer Jobs Program*, is seeking an individual who is passionate about the ocean and interested in marine conservation to work in our Sointula office this summer. Preference will be given to students in post-secondary education, pursuing a course of study relevant to Living Oceans’ work.

The position reports to the Clear the Coast program coordinator. Clear the Coast is Living Oceans’ campaign aimed at raising awareness of the threat to the marine environment from marine debris, communicating solutions, and coordinating volunteers around beach clean-ups on northern Vancouver Island.

The successful applicant will assist with our Clear the Coast program, including organizing and participating in marine debris removal operations; conducting public outreach work, and participating fully in the summer activities of Living Oceans.

Roles and Responsibilities: 
  • Field work (includes deploying and monitoring debris collection bags at alternating sites)
  • Coordinating beach clean-up events, including youth events
  • Sorting debris by plastic types, recording debris data
  • Uploading new Clear The Coast reports to online map
  • Social Media and other Clear the Coast outreach
  • Assisting with tabling at local events
Qualifications: 

Meets the qualifications for the Canada Summer Jobs program:

  • is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment
  • was registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year
  • intends to return to school on a full-time basis during the next academic year
  • is a student in a secondary, post-secondary, CEGEP (Quebec only), vocational or technical program
  • is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act* and
  • is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.

*Foreign students are not eligible.

General Requirements: 
  • Ability to work well individually and as a team member
  • Good communication and organizational skills                                                                           
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently and with little supervision
  • Creativity and writing skills
  • Photography and web sills will be considered an asset
  • A valid driver’s license will be considered an asset
