The world’s oceans are in crisis. Existing legal frameworks are failing to protect the marine environment. Without adequate marine protection, commercial fisheries could collapse and ecosystem stability will seriously deteriorate. Now is an exciting time for oceans management. The Common Fisheries Policy is undergoing reform, the Marine Strategy Framework Directive is being implemented, and marine protected areas are being established and enforced. ClientEarth is a unique, multi-discipline and cutting-edge organisation of experts. We bring together law, science and policy to create practical solutions to challenging environmental issues in Europe and beyond. We have an opportunity for a junior to mid-level lawyer (NQ to 5 years PQE) to join our Biodiversity team in London and have a positive impact on the critical issues our oceans face through working on fisheries and the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy. Project Description: Reform of the EU Common Fisheries Policy In July 2011 the European Commission published its proposals for the reform of the Common Fisheries. ClientEarth's Biodiversity team is working intensively on the new CFP as it completes its passage through the European Parliament and Council, aiming to secure legislation that delivers sustainable and ecosystem based fisheries management and ends overfishing. We have developed clear and detailed recommendations on what the new legislation must contain. For the next two years, we will be working with European lawmakers to secure a sustainable future for fisheries. Job specifications The successful candidate will play a key role contributing to the success of our fisheries team and developing our work on CFP reform. We have an urgent need for extra capacity to allow us to increase the effectiveness of our work. The new team member will support the work of senior staff, producing analysis, research and legal drafting to underpin our advocacy and input into the new legislation. The role provides considerable scope for initiative and developing ideas within a team to secure sustainable and ecosystems based fisheries in the EU in the long term. The candidate should be a good communicator to both internal and external audiences, a precise analyst and clear drafter, should have a strong eye for detail, the ability to get to grips quickly with new subjects, have sound legal and technical expertise and be a good team worker. The position will be based in London with travel to Brussels and Europe generally. Salary will be commensurate with the requirements of the role, the candidate’s experience, and the non profit sector. The position is available starting as soon as possible.
