Position: Marine Advisor, WCS Indonesia Program (or Senior Advisor, WCS-Indonesia Marine Program)

Location: Bogor, Indonesia
The Wildlife Conservation Society’s Indonesia marine program aims to conserve marine resources vital to the protection and sustainability of human livelihoods across the Indonesian archipelago from the Bay of Bengal through to the heart of the Coral Triangle. WCS employs a rigorous scientific approach to build capacity, strengthen management and inspire community stewardship for the protection and sustainable use of critical marine ecosystems, fisheries and threatened species. The program has three objectives: (1) to establish and increase the management effectiveness of 1 million hectares of marine protected areas (MPAs) in seascapes in Aceh, Java, Sulawesi, and the Sunda-Banda sea; (2) sustainable management of coastal fisheries in and around networks of MPAs; and (3) conservation of threatened marine species, particularly sharks and rays, through improving the sustainability of fisheries and trade, and combatting illegal trade in protected species.
Job summary: This position is responsible for the strategic oversight of and technical support for the WCS Indonesia Marine Program in all areas of program development and implementation. This role supports WCS management team in the development and implementation of the strategic plans and policies, provides leadership and direction to the marine program (currently focused on programs of work in Sunda-Banda Seascape, marine protected area management, sustainable coastal fisheries, sharks and rays). The position reports to the Regional Director and Indonesia Country Program Director and works closesly with the Indonesia marine program Seascapes, Fisheries and Species Conservation teams and the global WCS marine program in NY. The position oversees all technical assistance to the program, strategic research activities, and maintains appropriate communication with WCS project leads, key donors, funding agencies, local government institutions and NGO partners.
Responsibilities
Specific technical and program development responsibilities will also include:
– Building a marine science unit to better understand the challenges to seascape and fisheries management, and assess the impact of conservation interventions. – Developing and implement an action plan to assess historic datasets collected by WCS Indonesia on marine conservation issues in order to inform future actions and to raise the visibility and profile of WCS’s interventions in Indonesia. – Ensuring integration of latest advances in marine conservation and coastal fisheries science in program and project development and in fundraising efforts and proposals and ensure diffusion of latest science to members of the marine conservation team. – Ensuring appropriate and efficient collection, analysis, dissemination and publication of field data. – Publicizing WCS Indonesia marine program achievements through popular and scientific media, and publish project results in scientific journals and through presentation at national and international forums. – Ensuring national staff have capacity to and actively undertake research, contribute to scientific publications, and participate in national and international scientific fora. – Developing fundraising proposals to further these goals.
