Description

The Zoological Society of London is seeking two interns to provide support to the UK & Europe Conservation Programme. Successful candidates will be part of a busy team, focusing on marine and freshwater projects, and will have the opportunity to gain experience interning at a globally respected conservation organisation.

The internship will have a significant research component (60% of the time) and candidates are expected to spend at least two days a week in the field, throughout their six month placement. Additional responsibilities will include maintaining and updating the marine mammal sightings database; data input and analysis; representing ZSL at meetings and events; and providing general support to all other projects in the UK & Europe conservation programme. Field work primarily consists of:

• Juvenile European eel recruitment monitoring in the Thames catchment.
• Adult European eel PIT tagging research project in the North Kent Marshes.
• Seal population surveys in the Greater Thames Estuary.

The successful candidates must have an undergraduate and preferably a Masters level degree in Marine Biology or a related subject. The candidate will be self-motivated and possess excellent communication skills as they will be tasked with drafting reports and scientific poster presentations. The internship will also involve the Analysis of a variety of ecological/environmental data and the successful application of statistical analysis methods. The field work element of the internship requires experience carrying out surveys in the field and the ability to sometimes work in testing field conditions. Existing knowledge of the Thames Estuary and its fauna would be advantageous.

It is essential that candidates have either a full UK manual driving licence, or equivalent, and be confident of driving through London.

The internship is for six months, starting on 1st April 2014 and running until the 26th September 2014. The role is part time (4 days per week) and is based at ZSL’s Conservation Programmes department in Regent’s Park. All applicants must be able to show that they have ‘the right to work in the UK’.
