Description

Chemonics seeks a manufacturing production specialist for the ongoing USAID-funded Haiti Improved Cooking Technology Program to establish the foundation for a sustainable market for clean, efficient, and affordable cooking solutions. The mass demand for and resulting production of charcoal in Haiti contributes to widespread deforestation, leaving residents highly vulnerable to severe weather without the protection of natural, wooded watersheds. Chemonics works with the government, private sector, and civil society in Haiti to establish a thriving market for near- and long-term clean cooking solutions, including improved biomass cookstoves (ICS) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cookstoves. The manufacturing production specialist will provide technical assistance and hands-on training to cookstove manufacturers in Haiti to improve processing, manufacturing, and production systems and techniques, to the extent possible using the manufacturers' existing tools, supplies, equipment, and staff. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities include:
  • Develop machinery maintenance procedures and checklists
  • Train production team on correct use of equipment (operator training)
  • Deliver specialized and tailored training to ICS manufacturer management, machine operators, assembly workers, and other staff on workplace safety
  • Consult with ICS manufacturer management, machine operators, assembly workers, and other staff to develop comprehensive workplace safety plan and prioritized list of recommended improvements to workplace safety
  • Provide specialized training on environmental management concerns, including the environmentally responsible operation and maintenance of machinery and full production lifecycle environmental management from inputs to finished product
  • Provide specialized technical advice and training to ICS and LPG production managers on optimal production processes and procedures
  • Provide specialized technical advice and training to ICS and LPG production managers on quality assurance and quality control, incorporating systems for continuous improvement and worker participation in a comprehensive quality control system
  • Consult with ICS manufacturer management to identify further process improvements and capital expenditures for machinery/equipment to increase production volumes, improve efficiency, and enhance safety
Qualifications:
  • Technical expert in small and medium-sized manufacturing and production, with extensive relevant experience with industrial equipment and processes including a particular emphasis on metalworking
  • Experience with demonstrated record of success working with small and medium manufacturers in a developing country context required
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • Fluent English required; French language skills highly desirable
