Description

Working to improve the governance and management of tropical forests for the benefit of people, biodiversity, and sustainable development.

Tropenbos International (TBI) envisions a future in which forests and trees are used sustainably for the benefit of local people and the global community.  By using evidence to make conscious choices and finding the right balance between the needs of all stakeholders involved, we contribute to sustainable solutions for forested landscapes. We work to improve the livelihoods of local communities, as well as bring significant benefits to global society through climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation.

Starting in 1986 as a Dutch non-profit and non-governmental organisation, in 2017 we became a global network of independent members, working in more than 10 countries in the global south. TBI is the secretariat of this network.

We now wish to appoint an exceptional leader as our next Managing Director and secretary of the Network to steer the organisation to realise our ambitions for a positive impact. Reporting to the Board of Tropenbos, this is an exciting opportunity for an individual to mobilise supporters for TBI’s mission, grow its global network and mission to protect forests, and achieve social impact for its inhabitants. The Managing Director will chair the Management Team and be responsible for strategy development and implementation, resource mobilisation, and external representation across members, funders, partners, and stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will bring a considerable track record of strategic leadership skills with the ability to inspire, motivate and empower staff and partners, ideally gained in an international working environment. The successful Managing Director will be an effective ambassador and spokesperson for Tropenbos and bring excellent networking and stakeholder management skills at a senior and global level. Technical understanding and practical work relating to forests, local communities, and sustainable development are highly desirable. The ability to communicate effectively in Dutch will be beneficial, as is experience of living and working in tropical forest landscapes. Most of all, our next Managing Director will demonstrate a personal commitment to Tropenbos’ values and mission to benefit people, biodiversity, and sustainable development.

This position is based in Ede, the Netherlands, with international travel.
