California Center for Sustainable Energy ( CCSE) is an independent, nonprofit organization based in San Diego that accelerates the adoption of clean and efficient energy solutions via education, market facilitation and policy innovation. At CCSE, we work with policy makers, public agencies, local governments, utilities, business and civic leaders and individuals, and seek to activate integrated rather than singular or silo-ed energy solutions.  CCSE informs through best practices learned from daily work; drives energy innovation via facilitation, tools and services; and empowers people to make wise energy decisions.

JOB SUMMARY

CCSE is looking for an experienced, dynamic, focused individual with entrepreneurial spirit and drive and strong management skills.  The director of programs will develop and lead innovative programs to advance the adoption of energy efficiency, renewables, and clean transportation.

Candidates must be able to work collaboratively in a team environment and empower others to take responsibility for delivery of quality results. S/he must have a strong grasp of the energy technology and policy landscape, the ability to inspire others through written and verbal communications, and familiarity with program development, work planning and budgeting.

The director of programs provides leadership for CCSE program services, including managing day-to-day operations of the program team and providing operational oversight to ensure that implementation is aligned with CCSE strategies across markets being served.  Develops and implements effective business processes to operate and enhance CCSE program services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The director's primary responsibilities include:

  • Oversee all aspects of CCSE’s programs, including such activities as work plan supervision, budgeting, reporting, analysis, quality control, and employee development and performance.
  • Manage contracts and subcontracts to ensure achievement of contract objectives, including contract negotiation, budget management and results reporting and service delivery.
  • Work with finance and operations directors to establish programs and lead long-range and annual work planning and budgeting for programs.
  • Oversee development of integrated, strategic marketing plans for programs
  • Build long-term relationships with customers across the energy sector and ensure project delivery and high levels of customer satisfaction.  Engage proactively with the wider group in order to achieve consistency, optimal delivery and synergy.
  • Recruit, manage and mentor a team of specialists to support the development and execution of the program strategy.
  • Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish and monitor priorities, and conduct annual performance appraisals.
  • Promote a culture of respect, performance, continuous learning and a commitment to the individual.
  • The Director of Programs reports to the Managing Director and serves as a member of the Executive Team and broader Management Team. The Director of Programs is responsible for 37 employees with up to 5 direct reports.

 

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Successful and skilled individual from the energy market with a robust intellect and technical profile.  Knowledge of a range of energy disciplines advantageous.
  • Strong leadership track record with potential to develop their career further and the ability to drive a business forward.
  • Program management experience, including tactical decision-making, facilitation, communications and the ability to develop and attain goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage all aspects of large, complex projects.
  • Commercially astute with genuine P&L accountability experience.
  • Able to develop lasting customer relationships, operating at the highest levels.
  • Motivated and inspirational individual, capable of mobilizing a large workforce to ensure the vision is achieved.
  • Strong understanding of energy policy issues, environmental stewardship, and energy technologies including renewable sources and energy efficiency.
  • Significant project management experience, including assignment and monitoring of contractors/subcontractors and reporting on work.
  • Understanding of sales tools and sales cycle involved in moving homeowner and building owners through the education and decision-making process involved in energy retrofit work.
  • Self-directed, effective communicator, strong time management skills, and a creative problem solver.
  • Commitment to values of mutual respect and collaboration, teamwork, and diversity.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and management skills.
  • Ability to carry out systematic data tracking and reporting processes and implement planned steps from start to finish.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  An example of this would be a Bachelor’s degree, an MBA or master’s degree and/or at least 10 years professional experience in the energy field, sales and marketing, or selling technical or engineering, services.
  • Business/finance skills sufficient to understand budgeting, financial payback and return on investment.
  • Prior work experience at a management level in for profit, nonprofit, and/or utility company preferred.
  • Connections to and contacts in the energy sector and environmental nonprofit groups.
  • Experience communicating with and including culturally diverse constituencies in programmatic work.
  • Understanding of the multidisciplinary aspects of energy projects including planning, permitting, finance, and technology.
