The Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership (LowCVP) is seeking a new Managing Director. The position requires a passionate advocate for low carbon transport able to build consensus between conflicting and competing interests and motivate action by both business and Government to tackle market barriers. An accomplished communicator with strong management skills, you will lead the next phase of the Partnership’s development working with an experienced team of 5 staff, 200 diverse members and supportive engagement from government Departments. The post is based in Westminster with a salary and benefits commensurate with a Managing Director’s position in a high profile environment. The Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership (LowCVP) is a not for profit multi-stakeholder organisation with around 200 members. The Partnership works to accelerate a sustainable shift to lower carbon vehicles and fuels in the UK and thereby stimulate opportunities for UK businesses. Membership is drawn from vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers, fuel suppliers, major fleet operators, environmental and consumer groups, academics and government departments. LowCVP’s activities are managed by a Secretariat of five staff plus the MD. 

The role

 The Managing Director is responsible for:

  1. Developing a strategic plan to advance the organisation’s mission and objectives
  2. Developing and as appropriate revising the annual work programme in consultation with funders, members and the Board
  3. Acting in the role of the Company Secretary to ensure legal requirements are adhered to and necessary insurances are maintained
  4. Planning, developing, and implementing strategies for managing income and other resources and ensuring these are only exclusively to further the objectives of the Partnership. This includes recommending an annual budget for Board approval
  5. Raising revenues for Partnership activities including diversifying funding sources
  6. Overseeing operations to cost-effectively and efficiently deliver quality outputs from Partnership activities including developing the organisation’s operational and financial procedures and ensuring these are adhered to
  7. Reviewing activity reports and financial statements (prepared by the Bookkeeper) to monitor progress towards meeting objectives and revising plans and priorities as appropriate. Reporting progress on a regular basis to the Board, Council, Funders and Members
  8. Setting objectives for the staff and monitoring progress in meeting these. Reviewing remuneration and benefits annually and ensuring HR policies and legal requirements are adhered to
  9. Ensuring member activities and meetings are efficiently planned and managed to provide enjoyable, informative and useful outcomes
  10. Promoting the Partnership mission and positions through written articles and personal appearances at conferences and in the media
  11. Representing the Partnership in meetings with Government, key stakeholders and at formal functions. Willingness to attend evening functions at least 1 night a week is essential. 

Required and desired skills:  The MD will be:

A respected leader with strong interpersonal, network and facilitation skills able to manage complex relationships between diverse stakeholders and build consensus

  • Knowledgeable about sustainable transport and ideally possess a detailed knowledge of the challenges of market transformation to lower carbon vehicle and fuel alternatives
  • A motivator of change, able to stimulate action by members, wider stakeholders and Government  
  • Successful in influencing the direction of policy – ideally at a national level
  • Experienced in managing budgets – ideally the particular issues with  managing public funding
  • Able to grow revenues from a range of source.
  • A great communicator, ideally with media experience
  • An effective programme manager and highly innovative
  • A sound manager of staff and organisations, ideally with Board-level experience

 The MD will report quarterly to the LowCVP Board working independently and autonomously but in regular contact with the Chairman. The MD will also join the Board of Cenex as LowCVP’s representative.

Terms and Conditions: The position is full time with a salary with a commensurate with a Managing Director’s position in a high profile environment and dependent upon the experience and capability of the successful candidate. A 10% discretionary performance-related bonus is also available. Benefits are:
