Opower is seeking a Manager or Director, Market Development & Regulatory Affairs, Northeast & Canada to work in our Arlington, Virginia office and expand our business opportunities throughout the northeastern United States and eastern Canada. Opower is growing rapidly and we need an entrepreneurial professional who can use the policy-making and regulatory processes to advance the market for energy efficiency and accelerate our sales.

About the Job

As the Manager/Director, Market Development and Regulatory Affairs, Northeast & Canada you will be responsible for executing Opower’s regulatory and policy strategy throughout the region. Opower works with utilities, and engages closely with government officials, regulators, and stakeholders to remove obstacles or promote policies to advance sales. In this role, you will report to the Senior Director of Market Development and Strategy and work closely with the VP for East Coast Sales and her team. Areas of responsibility will include, but not be limited to New England, Eastern Canada, and parts of the Mid-West. This is an excellent opportunity for a government professional with great business instincts who wants to make a move to the private sector, or for a business professional with a strong understanding of how policy can advance business objectives.
The ideal candidate brings great business judgment to government work. You are a relationship builder, policy advocate, and communicator with strong analytical skills. Candidates should prefer to spend more time in the field growing a market than at a desk. Regional knowledge and relationships are a plus. This role will involve travel about 25% of the time and will be based in Opower’s Arlington, Virginia headquarters.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with the sales team and our clients to build regulatory acceptance with Public Utility Commissions for Opower’s innovative products to ensure that our clients get full credit for the energy savings we deliver.
  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders, including regulatory commissions, state energy officials, legislators, utility clients, environmental groups, and consumer advocates.
  • Be a public spokesperson for Opower in regulatory proceedings, legislative hearings, conferences, and other external meetings.
  • Work with industry and stakeholder partners to grow and/or defend the overall market for energy efficiency in your region.

About You

  • You have a BA/BS from a top university and preferably a relevant advanced degree
  • You have at least five years of work experience in a relevant field.
  • You are an exceptional written and oral communicator who knows how to advocate for an idea
  • You are detail-oriented, entrepreneurial, and have strong political instincts.
  • You can think strategically about how to solve complex problems and can convince others to adopt your vision
  • You are a strong relationship builder and connector
  • You have proven analytical skills and at least a basic understanding of statistics.
  • Energy industry or policy knowledge is a plus
  • You function well in a fast-paced, team-focused environment where you need to build consensus across departments.
  • You are passionate about becoming an energy efficiency evangelist
