The Rainforest Alliance’s TREES (Training, Extension, Enterprises and Sourcing) promotes sustainable livelihoods and protects biodiversity in forest-dependent communities. We work to enhance the competitiveness of community and indigenous forestry enterprises by building business skills, increasing efficiencies, and facilitating investment in value-added processing, expanding income opportunities from wood and non-wood forest products and environmental services, and increasing access to local and global markets through Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. 

Position Summary: 

The Manager, Peru will be responsible for the general management of TREES in Peru, including orientation and leadership in planning the work at a local level, as well as the development of strategies for the geographical expansion and for deepening the impact of TREES. S/he will be responsible for maintaining close relations with collaborators and key partners in Peru and identifying funding opportunities. S/he will also provide direction and supervision to the activities in Peru related to the regional project “Strengthening of Small and Medium-sized Forest Entreprises,” funded by the Multilateral Investment Fund in the Inter-American Development Bank (MIF-IDB), the forestry components of the USAID’s Initiative for Conservation of the Andean Amazon (ICAA) and Reduction of Emissions from all Land Uses, supported by the Department of State/USAID (ReLeaf project). Additionally, s/he will coordinate with both employees and consultants hired for these projects, with the local, regional and national government, as well as with the project partners in order to successfully accomplish the project activities.

Responsibilities: 
  • Provide direction and supervision to the programs in Peru, with special emphasis on the “Strengthening of Small and Medium-sized Lumber Business” (MIF – IDB), ICAA and ReLeaf projects;
  • Guide the development of strategic and operative plans, on a national level and guarantee the accomplishment of results and objectives defined in those plans;
  • Provide leadership in the development of new technical, institutional and political perspectives, in order to achieve the projects’ objectives and results and Rainforest Alliance’s mission;
  • Identify compensation funding opportunities and develop supporting proposals in coordination with RA’s Development Unit;
  • Prepare consultants’ scope of work, and review and control their work;
  • Negotiate Memorandums of Understanding, promote strategic partnerships, and assure the coordination with governments, the private sector and communities;
  • Formulate budgets and control fund use according to the work plans and financial projections;
  • Contribute with the annual planning, budgets and present periodic reports through projects;
  • Supervise, coordinate and provide assistance to the work done in the country by regional specialists, who support the development of small and medium forest enterprises;
  • Assure the operation reports for each project are written timely; and
  • Other duties assigned.
Qualifications: 
  • University degree in Forest Engineering, Natural Resources Management, Rural Development or related fields;
  • 7 – 10 years work experience in the Peruvian forestry sector and/or the development sector;
  • 7 – 10 years work experience Administrating programs and projects, including work planning, budgeting, presenting reports and staff management;
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in field work with forest dependent communities and indigenous groups;
  • Verifiable experience with main approaches in the verification of development and silviculture in small and medium-sized enterprises, community development of forestry enterprises and forests with direct work experience in the private forestry sector (desirable);
  • Verifiable experience in experience in field project management;
  • Experience in technical and financial supervision of governments, bilateral or multilateral funded projects;
  • Knowledge of the forest policy in Peru, including climate change issues related to forest management;
  • Previous experience with projects funded by the IDB, USAID or other international aid agencies (desirable);
  • Ability to work effectively with a broad variety of people, partners in the community, government officials, private sector representatives and specialists in difficult/complex environments;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in Spanish, and fluency in English;
  • Solid knowledge of MS Office;
  • Strong analytical skills, to respond in diverse cultural situations; and
  • Disposition to reside in Puerto Maldonado, with frequent trips to Lima and other regions of Peru.
Salary: 

Commensurate with experience.
