POSITION OVERVIEW

BSR seeks an experienced manager for its operations in Europe, Middle East and Africa to develop and implement a donor development strategy as well as to design, monitor and implement development projects in collaboration with a global team of sustainability experts.

BSR implements a wide variety of programs with support from both private foundations and bilateral as well as multilateral agencies to further our mission of creating a just and sustainable world. We work with funders such as the World Bank/IFC, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), the US Department of State, the British Consulate General in Guangzhou, the MacArthur Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the David & Lucile Packard Foundation, and GE Foundation. Our grant-funded initiatives are global in scope and serve an important role in BSR’s efforts to promote corporate social responsibility thus complementing our work with the private sector. In recent years, grant-funded projects make up 15-25% of BSR’s annual revenues. 

Most of our development projects seek to harness the organizational, operational, technological and financial acumen of the private sector in the pursuit of more environmentally and socially sustainable development. We seek to create projects that contribute to sustainable business objectives and align with the Millennium Development Goals and other key development metrics. As such, it is critical that the manager thrives working in an organizational environment that connects the private sector with the sustainability and development agendas.

Our current and future grant-funded initiatives focus on opportunities to:             

1) promote human/labor rights; 2) improve environmental performance, including resources efficiency and climate change; 3) advance social and economic development opportunities along global supply chains, including sustainable consumption and production as well as private sector engagement on base of the pyramid (BOP) models. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Based in BSR’s Paris office, the Manager will play a key role in devising, implementing and managing BSR’s donor development strategy in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Whereas the initial, primary objective will be obtaining new grant funding in the EMEA region to build a robust development project portfolio, the Manager will also be actively involved in managing projects, including implementation and monitoring of projects in developing countries.

Donor Funding: The Manager will lead efforts to develop new donor relationships and secure grant funding in the EMEA-region. The Manager will work in concert with the Paris-based Regional Managing Director and the Director of Partnership Development based in San Francisco to formulate new initiatives that synthesize BSR program interests with the funding priorities of target donors, including the European Commission, multilateral donors and agencies as well as key bilateral donors.

External Representation: The Manager will represent BSR to an external audience by: meeting with representatives from target donors; identifying and forming beneficial external partnerships; attending & presenting at industry conferences; and writing occasional publications.

Advisory Services and project implementation: Though primarily focused on sourcing new grant opportunities with European donors, the Manager will also play a key role in implementing project work funded by European and other donors.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in economic development, development studies, geography, political science, or related field; 

6-10 years of relevant professional experience, including field work in a developing or emerging market country;

Experience in a Junior Professional Officer  (JPO) program or similar in a developing country a plus;

Proven and demonstrable track record of success in working with European donors to successfully obtain donor/grant funding;

Experience in bidding for tender contracts a plus;

Understanding of the grant and tender application processes with the European Commission (with preference for direct experience);

Experience managing multiple, disparate projects simultaneously; 

Fluent both in written and conversational English and another major European language; additional language skills, in particular French, is a plus;

Well-developed interpersonal skills for high-level interaction with potential donors;

Excellent presentation and facilitation skills;

Ability to undertake business travel up to 30% time;

Capacity to work and thrive in a growing, fast-paced entrepreneurial organization within a collaborative environment;
