Job Title: Manager of Development
Reports to: BC Director of Development
Location: Victoria, BC

Role Summary:

The Manager of Development is responsible for management, planning, coordination, and implementation of a proposal / grant writing program for the BC Region. Through strategic attention to effective donor relations management and record and information tracking this position will play a key role with the goal to build major gift support for the BC Region.

Job Responsibilities:

1. Proposal / Grant Writing Management

  • collaborates with regional staff to create specific as well as generic proposals and related materials for their use in soliciting corporate and foundation gifts
  • identifies funding opportunities by conducting research, through various print, electronic, and other sources, including current NCC supporters
  • takes  responsibility for building relationships with funding source representatives to whom the proposals are directed
  • tracks deliverables (i.e., reports, funding installments) required by current donors and partners; obtains progress information from regional and national staff, and develops reports as required
  • collaborates with NCC’s staff to develop PowerPoint and other presentation materials as necessary to support funding requests

2. Donor Relations Management

  • manages donor recognition and cultivation
  • liaises with the appropriate partner agencies to ensure that appropriate recognition has been prepared and communicated
  • utilizes the Prospects Management Database and the Raiser’s Edge
  • ensures that all donor gift information is recorded, tracked, and communicated in an accurate and timely manner for reporting and other purposes
  • utilizes a variety of tools to thank/steward donors
  • undertakes other activities to support major gift funding

3. Records and Information Management

  • prepares monthly, quarterly and annual development reports
  • creates  Raiser’s Edge queries and reports in support of development needs, (donors, volunteers, gifts, moves, quarterly development performance, etc.);
  • manages and updates donor and prospect lists and donor histories in the Raiser’s Edge
  • working with regional staff, tracks fundraising activities in a consistent form and provides regular updates on fundraising progress

4. Leaders  in Conservation Program

  • responsible for all facets of the management, planning, development and implementation of the regional LIC program to build and generate major gifts
  • ensures that an effective, thoughtful and appropriate acquisition, recognition, and stewardship program is in place
  • oversees initiatives to renew, upgrade, and steward LIC donors
  • identifies new LIC prospects by conducting research and collaborating with regional and national staff as well as key regional volunteers

Key Result Areas:

Key to success is the ability to work collaboratively to develop and carry out an intelligent and effective acquisition plan for new supporters, while ensuring that an effective donor stewardship plan for existing supporters is in place.

Competencies Required/Preferred:

  • experience in successful conservation / environmental proposal / grant writing and excellent prospect research skills
  • a minimum of 3 years demonstrated successful not-for-profit major gift fundraising experience
  • demonstrated analytical and strategic planning abilities and detail oriented
  • exceptional verbal and written communications skills including a proven track record in public speaking and small interpersonal meetings
  • strong project and time management skills with a demonstrated ability to prepare and manage deadlines, timelines, goals and expectations wisely
  • ability to foster strong working relationships with colleagues and program or project partners
  • excellent ability to create, organize and maintain effective and efficient record keeping system
  • proven budget planning and financial reporting skills
  • ability to excel within a dynamic fundraising environment
  • proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint
  • experience and expertise with Raiser’s Edge strongly recommended
  • commitment to the core values and mission statement of NCC

Internal and External Contacts:

The incumbent works closely with program and project staff, and when appropriate, the Regional Vice President, National team members and members of the British Columbia Board and/or select volunteers.
