Manager of Conservation Planning

Great Plains Regional Office

 

Ducks Unlimited’s Great Plains Regional Office is seeking an accomplished and dynamic individual to lead research and planning efforts across our seven-state region.  The manager will advise the regional leadership team and provide critical thinking to help guide aspects of regional conservation operations.  The manager will also serve as a member of the national science team to support DU’s continental, science-based approach to conservation.  The manager will provide scientific leadership to help guide the collective work of various partnerships (e.g., joint ventures) across the Great Plains landscape. 

Specific Duties

  • Supervise DU’s research projects across the Great Plains Region.
  • Collaborate with regional staff to review key programmatic assumptions and develop research to reduce uncertainty in priority landscapes.
  • Develop and refine conservation planning tools for priority landscapes.
  • Supervise GPRO’s GIS group and manage the region’s research/GIS budget.
  • Secure public funding to support research, planning and GIS efforts.
  • Coordinate cooperative research efforts with regional universities and agency partners to maximize efficiency of the partners’ collective efforts.
  • Maintain an active publication record submitting at least one manuscript per year to peer-reviewed journals.
  • Serve on DU’s national science team.
  • Serve on technical committees of joint ventures and other coordinating groups across the region.
  • Synthesize, develop and help apply relevant science into regional and national public policy efforts.
  • Support philanthropic fundraising efforts through assisting with field experiences, select grassroots events, donor visits and grant proposals.
  • Work closely with Ducks Unlimited Canada’s scientists to maximize efficiency of Prairie Pothole Region research and conservation planning efforts. 

Qualifications: 

  • Graduate training in waterfowl or wetlands ecology or a related field.  A Ph.D. is preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience in ecological research with a solid publication record.
  • At least 3 years of experience in supervising a group of staff, managing budgets and working on inter-disciplinary teams.
  • Exhibit an outgoing personality and solid communications skills.
  • Ability to apply research results to applied conservation programs.
  • Demonstrate an entrepreneurial approach to science and conservation.
  • Ability to develop research proposals and secure funding.
  • Ability to function both individually and as a member of a diverse team. 

This position reports to the Director of the Great Plains Region and is required to work out of the Great Plains Regional Office in Bismarck, ND.
