Description

Conservation International’s marine climate change program provides the technical foundation for addressing climate change throughout CIs marine programs. In addition to providing strategic and technical leadership and support across the institution, the program directly supports field activities, such as vulnerability assessments and adaptation planning and implementation. Further, through the marine climate change program Conservation International (CI) is partnering to lead an international consortium that focuses on the conservation and management of coastal systems for their carbon sequestration and storage capacity, in addition to the numerous other vital ecosystem services they provide. The consortium is implementing the International Blue Carbon Initiative (http://thebluecarboninitiative.org/), which integrates targeted science, policy, and economics of coastal “blue” carbon through working groups, pilot projects, international policy, and capacity building.

 

This position will work closely with the Senior Director, Strategic Marine Initiatives, to support the long-term growth and success of CI’s marine climate change program. The position will be responsible for the day to day management of the blue carbon and marine adaptation programs, including project development, implementation, research, communications and broader capacity building. The position will be responsible for building and maintaining a strong network of climate change, conservation and related experts to support the work of CI and its partners. The position will be the technical point-person for supporting the field programs on marine climate change issues. The position will coordinate with the Seascapes program, Moore Center for Science, Center for Environment and Peace, other CI divisions and external partners to ensure successful completion and maximum integration of marine climate change activities at CI.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Marine Climate Change Adaptation

  • Under the supervision of the Senior Director, Strategic Marine Initiatives, responsible for day-to-day management of the marine vulnerability assessment program including:
  • working with field programs to develop and fundraise for projects,
  • support field programs in design and implementation of Vulnerability Assessment projects,
  • ensure close consultation between CI programs on vulnerability assessment process,
  • identify and coordinate with external experts and consultants and needed,
  • lead development and dissemination of communication products,
  • identification and development of follow-on adaptation activities,
  • responsible for development and implementation of broader Vulnerability Assessment Capacity Building program including development of relevant training materials.

Blue Carbon Program

  • Under the supervision of the Senior Director, Strategic Marine Initiatives, responsible for day-to-day management of the International Blue Carbon Initiative including:
  • coordinating the International Blue Carbon Scientific And Policy Working groups, including organizing and overseeing at least two meetings and workshops yearly, supporting completion of working group products (including supervising consultants), leading development and dissemination of communication products, communicating
  • maintaining and updating the Blue Carbon Initiative website
  • support field programs in fundraising, design and implementation of Blue Carbon projects,
  • development and implementation of a clear communications and media plan. Lead creation of communication products as required to support communication plan.
  • maintain ongoing and clear communication with Initiative experts and partners.

Broad Technical and fundraising support

 

  • Provide fundraising support to the marine climate change program, marine division and field programs including writing proposals for a broad variety of funding sources.
  • Maintain close working relationships with and regularly liaise with the other marine program, Moore Center, other CI divisions and external partners to ensure successful completion and maximum integration of marine climate change activities at CI. Ensure close consultation and communication with the Senior Director, Strategic Marine Initiatives, on issues, project development and implementation of projects.

 

Working Conditions:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marine, climate change or related field
  • 3-5 years of relevant work experience
  • Knowledge of climate change impacts on the ocean and marine biodiversity
  • Strong organizational and financial management skills
  • Proven ability to engage and collaborate with diverse teams and individuals across various disciplines, cultures and backgrounds to achieve shared goals
  • Ability to work well independently and coordinate teams remotely
  • Ability to deliver results while managing competing priorities under tight deadlines
  • Outstanding written and spoken communication skills
  • Experience writing for broad variety of audiences, including academic, media, web blogs, funding proposals

 

Preferred:

  • Graduate degree in marine science, climate change or related field
  • Fluency in written and spoken Spanish and/or Portuguese
  • Website design and maintenance experience
