The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is a private, non-profit organization that prides itself on its entrepreneurial, science-based approach to achieving conservation success through direct action. Purpose and General Description:

The Manager, Major Gifts – Central and Northern Alberta assumes a significant role in the coordination and delivery of fundraising activities to further the mission of the Nature Conservancy of Canada and to maximize general revenue for the Alberta Region, with a particular emphasis on Central and Northern Alberta. The incumbent plays a key role in developing and implementing strategies for the Major Gifts Program in order to increase revenues from corporations, individuals, foundations; takes the lead role in soliciting gifts for the Major Gifts program in Central and Northern Alberta, and works closely with the Alberta Development team program to deliver program benefits for donors; takes a lead role in developing and implementing a strategy for raising funds from corporate donors in Central and Northern Alberta, both through philanthropic gifts and sponsorships; working with the Regional Vice President - Alberta, the Director, Strategic Philanthropy and Conservation, and the Director of Development & Communications, Alberta, takes a lead role in engaging area board members and volunteers in fundraising. As a member of the Alberta fundraising team, the Manager, Major Gifts – Central and Northern Alberta mentors other staff in donor solicitation and recognition, and ensures that regional fundraising and communications activities conform to national standards and policies. These responsibilities are carried out within assigned fundraising department and project-related expense budgets.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Major Gift Program Fundraising

  • Working closely with Director, Development & Communications and Alberta Development team, achieve the annual major gift fundraising targets to meet regional goals by:
    • Engaging new prospects in the major gifts program;
    • Securing individual gifts for the major gifts program;
    • Securing foundation gifts for the major gifts program;
    • Securing corporate gifts and sponsorship for the major gifts program;
    • Coordinating Leaders in Conservation and major gift prospect events.

2. Corporate Fundraising

  • Working closely with the Director of Development & Communications, Alberta, the Manager, Major Gifts – Central and Northern Alberta will develop a corporate fundraising strategy for NCC’s Central and Northern Alberta region operations, including:
    • Identification, recruitment and maintenance of corporate partnership opportunities for Alberta;
    • Development of compelling pitch materials;
    • Negotiation of terms for philanthropic gifts and sponsorships, as required;
    • Stewardship of corporate partners to ensure terms of gift agreements are met.

3. Board Engagement

  • Work with the Alberta Region’s Central and Northern Alberta board members to identify and solicit both individual and corporate prospects.
  • Work closely with the Finance & Fund Development Committee of the board to guide strategies and solicitations.

4. Provincial Government Engagement

  • Working closely with the Regional Vice President, Alberta and Associate Regional Vice President, Alberta, the Manager, Major Gifts – Central and Northern Alberta will liaise with government officials to inform about our work and conservation as appropriate. The Manager, Major Gifts – Central and Northern Alberta may participate in meetings as required with Assistant Deputy Ministers, Deputy Ministers and/or Ministers alongside the Regional Vice President, Alberta, Associate Regional Vice President, Alberta and regional board members.
  • The Manager, Major Gifts – Central and Northern Alberta may participate on NCC Alberta’s behalf on subcommittee work with the Alberta North American Waterfowl Management Program, or other committees as approved by the Director, Development & Communications, Alberta.

5. Other Duties

  • Maintain timely electronic notes of all communications with or about donors and prospects;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director, Development & Communications, Alberta.

Required Skills and Attributes:

  • At least 5 years experience in a fundraising or marketing role;
  • Exceptional verbal and written communications skills including a proven track record in public speaking and small interpersonal meetings;
  • Demonstrated successful experience in a development and/or communications role, including proposal writing, and volunteer and event coordination;
  • High level of attention to detail;
  • Ability to support a decentralized delivery of organizational goals and objectives;
  • A strong sense of self-confidence, particularly when dealing with high-level supporters and volunteers;
  • Strong negotiation skills;
  • Strong project management skills with a demonstrated ability to prepare and manage timelines, goals and expectations wisely;
  • Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and Raisers’ Edge;
  • Excellent ability to create, organize and maintain effective and efficient record keeping systems;
  • Ability to obtain pertinent information from a variety of sources;
  • Experience in fundraising, preferably in a major campaign, will be considered a definite asset;
  • A demonstrated awareness of conservation issues in Alberta;
  • Understanding of and commitment to the role and mission of the Nature Conservancy of Canada;
  • Ability to work and travel within a flexible schedule, including occasional weekends and evenings;
  • A valid Alberta Drivers’ Licence is necessary.
