Oversee CI’s support to three remote project sites in Cambodia, directly supervising planning, day to day and long term management, financial, and administrative aspects of Central Cardamoms Protected Forest (CCPF), Veun Sai-Siem Pang Conservation Area (VSSPCA) and Prey Lang forest. Develop new projects in protected area (PA) management in Cambodia and the region, writing or contributing technical knowledge to funding proposals. Work closely with the Executive and Sr. Technical Directors to ensure management is aligned with CI’s objectives, develop new partnerships, and provide technical advice to relevant Cambodian national and provincial authorities, and other conservation partners.

Pursue new possible projects in forest governance and trade and facilitate multi stakeholder policy review of Cambodian forestry management.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Main Task

  • Manage CI’s day to day activities in Central Cardamoms Protected Forest, Veun Sai and Prey Lang areas which includes implementation of agreements between CI and the Forestry Administration and managing CI funded project work plans, budgets, as well as progress reporting. Activities across the three sites include budget monitoring, operational logistic support, species monitoring, community engagement, partnership creation and management.

Fundraising and Development

  • Fundraise to help support CI projects and strategies in Landscapes across Cambodia; establish and maintain close and effective relations with Government sub-grantees and official offices as well as develop new partnerships with NGO’s and private stakeholders

Develop forest governance and trade aspects of CI Cambodia

  • Continue CI forest policy reform process with NGO stakeholders and government partners; pursue projects under EU FLEGT and other governance/trade mechanisms; develop links with regional anti-trafficking groups with particular emphasis on rosewood and pangolin trades; contribute technical and policy advice on current and new policies made by the Forestry Administration of Cambodia.

Media and Communications

  • Manage media relationships and predict public exposure of projects so correct explanations can be developed and provided to media on topical issues surrounding CI projects or conservation in general in Cambodia; Promote CI projects with positive exposure in international and national media and entertainment outlets; Give advice on position of CI concerning developments with potential environmental impacts in areas CI works.

Technical Advice

  • Give advice and problem solve SMART data systems currently running in CCPF, VSSPCA, Tonle Sap and CCPF communities areas and develop SMART rollout in other areas CI works in Cambodia.

Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Working Conditions

  • This position requires regular travel to the CCPF, VSSPCA and Prey Lang areas. The sites are very remote environments, accessible in some cases only by motor bike.
  • Physical conditioning will be required to travel by motor bike for 45 minutes or more.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree, and at least 5 years practical experience in forest governance. 
  • PA management, conservation, natural resource management, or equivalent.
  • Strong leadership, field expertise, protected area management and biological research and monitoring skills; ability to live and work independently in remote areas, communicating with government,
  • NGOs, and local people; supervisory experience, excellent interpersonal and communication skills; problem solving, conflict resolution, and negotiation skills; exceptional written and oral communication skills in English; computer literate.

Preferred

  • Advanced degree.
  • Cambodia/SE Asia experience. 
  • Forest governance/trade experience.
