Description

The Environment and Social Issues Group (ESI) contributes to achieving BC Hydro’s (BCH) purpose of providing reliable power at low cost for generations by working across BC Hydro’s Engineering, Aboriginal Relations and Negotiations, and Generation business group to facilitate proactive leadership in sustainability through the integration of environmental and social aspects into the business.


DUTIES: As the leader of the ESI group, the successful candidate will:

  • Provide strategic planning, oversight and leadership for the environment and social issues (ESI) group in engineering, aboriginal relations & negotiations and generation (EARG)
  • Provide leadership and management for a team of professionals providing specialist natural, physical or social sciences related services to meet BC Hydro's environmental responsibilities and objectives
  • Participate in determining the overall business direction for the generation operations key business unit, contribute to managerial and operational decision making and provide expertise from an environmental and social issues perspective in meeting strategic objectives
  • Lead or participate on various policy and other steering committees and/or with customers related to BC Hydro's long and short term environmental objectives
  • Develop strategic forward looking relationships with First Nations, regulators at the provincial and federal levels & other stakeholders
  • Develop and maintain good relations with Government agencies, other utilities and environmental groups especially in emerging environmental issues and technologies
  • Liaise with senior Ministry of Environment and Fisheries and Oceans Canada officials on matters related to the operation of generation facilities and compensation programs
  • Establish priorities and prepare annual management plans
  • Provide approval for projects and maintain control of expenditures in accordance with BC Hydro’s administrative procedures
  • Lead proactive thinking, development and the initiation of progressive environmental planning and capital projects. 


QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will have:

  • A University degree in Biological Sciences, Resource Management, Business Administration, Engineering, Law or other applicable discipline
  • A minimum of nine to eleven years experience in senior managerial positions or  the equivalent combination of management and other relevant experience
  • Strong leadership capability
  • Solid experience managing a team of technical experts and a portfolio of work in a complex environment
  • Proven ability in relationship building, change management and stakeholder engagement
  • Proven experience managing multiple priorities and competing demands on time, budget and resources
  •  The ability to translate business insight into business strategies
  • Highly developed presentation, influencing, negotiation and communication skills to internal groups, regulatory agencies and executive management
  • Effective analytical and risk management skills
  • Experience dealing with ambiguity and work effectively outside of personal sphere of control. 
     

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: 

The following additional qualifications would be considered a definite asset:

  • Familiarity with provincial/ federal environment legislation and regulatory agencies, and their related impacts on the operations and maintenance of plants and facilities
  • Technical knowledge of environmental and natural resource disciplines, considerable knowledge of community and aboriginal issues and their relationship to the operation and maintenance of plants and/or facilities
