Description

As an important member of the Corporate Affairs team, the Manager for Corporate Affairs will have responsibility for managing discrete efforts to develop United's corporate responsibility program.  In particular, the Manager will manage projects that require collaboration with peers from across key departments in the company, in addition to external stakeholders.  The Manager will also manage specific environmental projects that improve the company's positioning as an environmentally responsible company.  The Manager will conduct research and analysis, ensuring up-to-date insights into leading corporate responsibility practices across airlines and other Fortune 500 corporate responsibility leaders.  The Manager will review relevant corporate reputation rankings and surveys and manage particular work efforts that address relevant components of rankings.  The Manager will work closely with the Managing Director of Corporate Affairs and other management and executives from other corporate departments.
Corporate Responsibility
  • Program Development and Management: Serve as project/program manager of key corporate responsibility programs.  Design programs that enable achievement of corporate responsibility goals. Collaborate with corporate affairs management and other corporate leaders to secure buy-in and approval. Develop project plans and manage across company divisions to successfully achieve project goals.  Develop project updates and report out on project status to company management as necessary.
  • External Relationship Development and Management: Identify potential third party and non-profit partners in corporate responsibility.  Work with the Managing Director to down-select key partners and prepare recommendation briefings for senior executives. Manage relationships with selected partners on an ongoing basis to ensure that partnership agreements are fully executed.
  • Annual Report Development: Manage the development of an annual corporate responsibility report.  Identify year-over-year updates to highlight in the report.  Collaborate with functional owners from across the company to develop and validate focus, content, and responsibility data. Work with the design firm and writers in coordinating development of the report.  Provide regular updates to Managing Director on progress of report development.
  • Cross-Divisional Coordination: Develop and maintain relationships with key corporate responsibility functional owners in other departments throughout the company.  Build and maintain awareness of corporate responsibility programs and initiatives. 
  • Metrics Monitoring and Reporting: Work across corporate departments to maintain updated information on key corporate responsibility metrics.  Evaluate value of metrics and metrics results in shaping corporate reputation as well as in positioning United as a responsible corporate citizen.  Work with Managing Director to identify key metrics to monitor.
  • Corporate Responsibility Working Group Management: Maintain a rolling chart of work to ensure that the working group covers the key topics required to achieve corporate responsibility objectives.  Support the Managing Director with shaping the agendas for the Working Group.  Prepare updates for corporate leadership review on progress of the Working Group.
  • Communications Strategy / Plan Development and Execution:  In collaboration with PR, communications, and marketing, develop a communications strategy and plan to position United as a responsible corporate citizen promoting our achievements in corporate responsibility.  Integrate corporate responsibility announcements and communications to ensure aligned and integrated positioning.
  • Benchmarking Analysis:  Manage an annual benchmarking analysis of key corporate responsibility metrics against other airlines and leading companies in corporate responsibility.  Develop conclusions for review by company executives and management.
Environment
  • Program and Project Management: Serve as project/program manager of key corporate environment programs such as carbon offsets, alternative fuels, or waste management.  Design programs that enable achievement of environmental responsibility goals. Collaborate with corporate affairs management and other corporate leaders to secure buy-in and approval. Develop project plans and manage across company divisions to successfully achieve project goals.  Develop project updates and report out on project status to company management as necessary.
  • External Relationship Development and Management: Identify potential third party and non-profit environmental partners.  Work with the Managing Director to down-select key partners and prepare recommendation briefings for senior executives. Manage relationships with selected partners on an ongoing basis to ensure that partnership agreements are fully executed and that the partnerships are best leveraged to achieve mutual benefits.
  • Environmental Transparency and Reporting: Develop and maintain an environmental reporting plan that aims to proactively share corporate environmental information with key stakeholders including corporate customers, third parties, etc.  Manage cross-departmental information collection and develop information to disclose company performance.  Manage responses to Carbon Disclosure Project and other surveys. Manage corporate footprint reports for key corporate customers and manage working relationships with sales team to coordinate distribution of reports.
Corporate Reputation
  • Project Development and Management: Serve as project manager for key corporate reputation initiatives.  Design programs that enable achievement of corporate reputation goals. Collaborate with corporate affairs management and other corporate leaders to secure buy-in and approval. Develop project plans and manage across company divisions as necessary to successfully achieve project goals.  Develop project updates and report out on project status to company management as necessary.
  • Reputation Planning: Manage reputation planning efforts supporting the development of action plans against specific reputation drivers.  Develop an integrated plan for reputation management leveraging the action plans developed.  Monitor and track progress against the integrated plan / action plans over time.
  • Reputation Research:  Conduct annual research against specific drivers of reputation and work with vendors to perform research and analysis.  Develop presentations and information materials for review by executives and management.  Coordinate research with peers in marketing.
  • Survey / Ranking Analysis:  Review United's ranking on key corporate reputation surveys.  Consistently monitor competitor rankings on surveys important to United.  Manage dedicated efforts to shape United's positioning on select rankings.  Collaborate with peers in other departments to execute against work plans for surveys.
CG&A Integrated Planning
  • Collaborate with management and executives from within Corporate and Government Affairs to develop strategic and tactical annual plans.
  • Integrate plans into a cohesive Corporate and Government Affairs plan at the strategic and tactical levels.
  • Monitor and capture progress on a recurring basis - monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, and annually.

Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in business, social sciences, or public policy is required
  • Advanced degree in business, social sciences, or public policy is preferred
Experience:
  • 7-10 years of direct experience in corporate affairs, corporate responsibility, and public relations
  • Progressive project and team management
  • Experience in briefing and working with senior corporate leaders and management
  • Experience in managing external relationships
  • Proven self-starter with leadership qualities and capabilities
