This is a Fixed Term Appointment for 1 Year with the possibility of extension or permanency but no guarantee.

Appointments to the Forestry Commission are made at the entry level of the salary quoted above except in exceptional circumstances where a candidates’ experience and skills may justify a higher starting salary.
 

The successful candidate will be required to undertake a Basic Disclosure check in line with HMG Baseline Personnel Security Standard.



Background Information

 

East England Forest District covers an area of 35000 hectares (ha) from North Norfolk to Brighton and is headed by Jim Lyon as FDM with over 100 directly employed staff.

The post will be based at Santon Downham as part of the Operations Team working, initially, throughout the Thetford Beat in England’s largest pine forest. The Beat is located on the Norfolk/Suffolk border around Thetford town and covers an area of c 19,000 ha with an annual restock programme of around 200 ha, an underplanting programme of 100 ha and a thinning and clear felling programme of around 170k cubic meters per annum.

Underplanting forms an increasing part of the management of Dothistroma Needle Blight in Corsican Pine, which crucially seeks to promote future resilience to climate change and disease. 

The majority of the Beat lies within a SPA and SSSI and is highly popular as a recreational area for both locals and a wide audience. The beat also includes a number of smaller woodlands in North Norfolk.

The position will support the Thetford based Operations team.

 

Purpose of the Job


To support the Forest and Land Management Team based from Thetford by collecting and analyzing biological data to determine the environmental effects of present and potential use of land habitats.

Key Work Areas

 

Modelling of deer species within Thetford Forest:

Use of thermal imaging equipment to assess deer populations and movements

Have the ability to use ‘distance’ programme to interpret thermal data

Data collection and interpretation

Species Evaluation
 
Monitoring and evaluation of restocking and underplanting sites in Thetford Forest in relation to:

Deer impacts and control

Impact of other mammals

 

Fact based establishment plan in collaboration with Establishment   Forester.

Appropriate assessments of areas of new silvicultural practice via:

Nightjar surveys

 

Vegetation surveys

Mammal surveys

Thermal Imaging and Population Assessments of all Deer Species

Supporting Wildlife Ranger Manager with duties including managing and monitoring Deer Licences, firearms standards and Larder procedures



Person Specification

 

Experience

Essential
Experience in experimental design and delivery

Experience of bird population surveying

Experience of vegetation surveying

Desirable
Experience of current forestry establishment methods

GIS experience and associated field survey tools

Professional and Technical Expertise

Essential
BA or MSc Degree or equivalent experience in Ecology or land based discipline

Deer Management Qualification (DMQ) 1 & 2

Desirable
Knowledge of thermal imaging techniques and interpretation

Competence in a range of IT applications e.g. MS Word, Excel, Access

Knowledge and application of deer population dynamics in Lowland Forestry

Ability to work with and influence neighbours for landscape scale deer management

Ability to work with others to establish practical field trials in alternative mammal management techniques
