The Maine Woods Naturalist  is responsible for the delivery of programs and activities at Gorman Chairback Camp, Little Lyford Lodges and Cabins, and Medawisla, all near Greenville Maine. Our goal is to better connect guests and visitors with their natural environment through quality programming and displays.

The Naturalist  will actively deliver programs at all locations as assigned. The Naturalist  will act as an interpretive and informational resource to guests and visitors, providing high-quality customer service at all times. The Naturalist  will report to the Senior Naturalist and work with fellow staff and volunteers to develop and implement high quality educational and recreational programs for guests and visitors.  This is a seasonal position, 20 hours per week, July through August and possibly into the fall.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and present interpretive programs throughout the day, two to three days a week.  Presentations may include natural/cultural history walks and talks and educational/ safety talks surrounding hydration, hiking, and Leave No Trace principles.
  • Lead outdoor programs, including but not limited to: ½ day to full day and overnight hikes in the area in all types of weather
  • Facilitate and lead multi day family and adult programs at  lodges
  • Assist with special events and custom programs
  • Facilitate the evening program series as needed.
  • Maintain and develop self guided interpretive materials for each destination.
  • Act as an interpretive resource for staff, volunteers and visitors.
  • Help coordinate efforts to integrate Leave No Trace principles and HikeSafe into interpretive programs
  • Meet regularly with supervisor to assess progress and make needed changes to the program.  Complete all forms including end-of-season report.
  • Must be willing to work weekends, evenings and holidays
  • AMC has zero tolerance for child abuse or placing children in danger. The Appalachian Mountain Club requires all employees who work in a program or facility which serves children, disabled persons, or the elderly to have a criminal record check performed on their name with satisfactory results.   

 Qualifications

  • College graduate or currently enrolled in a natural science or environmental interpretation/ education degree program, or relevant experience.
  • Previous experience in interpretive program delivery and techniques
  • Wilderness First Aid Certification, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to obtain a DOT medical card
  • Ability to work independently in a busy visitor center
  • Familiarity with natural history of the Northeastern U.S.
  • Physical ability to travel to all AMC destinations in all weather conditions is required, carrying loads of up to 40 pounds in a backpack, hiking on unimproved trails.
  • Strong organizational and written/verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent guest service skills and a demonstrated commitment to AMC goals.
