Description

The Luc Hoffmann Institute, based at WWF International, Switzerland, in partnership with WCMC, seek a full time Biodiversity, Threats and Drivers Officer to provide the main analytical thrust for a project that aims to look at threats and drivers to biodiversity, with a focus on some of the WWF priority places around the world. The individual will be hosted by WCMC and work with the Cambridge Conservation Initiative (CCI), at the University of Cambridge, and will also spend some amount of time with WWF UK and WWF International offices.

The postholder will map the relative importance of a key set of threats to the conservation of biological diversity within major priority conservation areas around the world through a combination of mappable data, IUCN data and expert opinion. They will also use surveys, and where appropriate, structured interviews, to build upon existing expert opinion data, with the goal to map expert knowledge linking and ranking the impact of threats within WWF priority places, and the links between threats and drivers. This expert opinion analysis will then be linked with work funded by CCI on using “top down” satellite derived threat proxies.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a relevant social science, natural science or ecological economics field, with a strong emphasis on analytical and quantitative skills. They will have extensive experience of using and analyzing large databases and of analyzing or working on threats and drivers from both of qualitative and quantitative perspective. They will also have experience of working in the developing world and will hold a proven record of academic performance. Furthermore, they will have an understanding of the essential characteristics of successful partnership-building and will be able to demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively and internationally. The candidate will participate in the Luc Hoffmann fellow postdoctoral mentoring program and interact with a large group of current postdocs at the Institute to enhance science and conservation delivery.
