Description

Chemonics seeks a longitudinal study report writer for the ongoing USAID-funded Haiti Improved Cooking Technology Program, which aims to establish the foundation for a sustainable market for clean, efficient, and affordable cooking solutions. The mass demand for and resulting production of charcoal in Haiti contributes to widespread deforestation, leaving residents highly vulnerable to severe weather without the protection of natural, wooded watersheds. Chemonics works with the government, private sector, and civil society in Haiti to establish a thriving market for near- and long-term clean cooking solutions, including improved biomass cookstoves and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cookstoves. The longitudinal study report writer will conduct a longitudinal assessment of the performance of available improved cookstoves (ICS) in typical charcoal-using households to better understand the potential ICS market in Haiti. The primary objectives of the study are to understand consumer preferences and to explore key stove design issues that reduce efficiency and durability. The report writer will provide up to four months of assistance over a one-year period. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities:
The longitudinal study report writer will collaborate with field staff and implementing partners to conduct direct data collection, a detailed study design, a stove use monitoring system (SUMS) analysis, and an indoor air pollution (IAP) analysis. The information generated will be used to create Interim and Final Reports that will address:
  • Patterns of Haitian household energy use behavior to inform stove choices and marketing
  • A comparison of stated manufacturer and laboratory performance measurements with field performance measurements over time
  • Demonstrated durability of each stove model compared to manufacturer claims
  • Insight into household members' roles in usage and adoption of ICS
  • Recommendations on monitoring and evaluation tools or techniques to improve emissions
Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in public health, social or physical sciences, or similar field
  • Minimum three years of experience working with improved cookstoves measuring health, indoor air pollution, and stove use
  • Minimum three years of experience writing, researching, and publishing reports related to developing countries, health, air pollution, or other environmental impacts on society or communities
  • Experience collaborating with partners in multiple countries
  • Demonstrated extensive experience with SUMS and IAP analysis
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • Professional fluency in English required; French language skill desirable
