Under the overall supervision of the Chief, AGPP and the immediate supervision of the Agricultural Officer (Migratory Pests), will participate in the daily operation of the Desert Locust Information Service (DLIS). In particular, the incumbent will:
use a geographic information system to enter, summarize and archive locust, environmental, rainfall and meteorological data received from affected countries;
participate in the analysis of locust and environmental data in order to assess the locust situation and environmental conditions;
prepare inputs for the monthly Desert Locust Bulletin;
assist in the customization and innovation of the geographic information systems used for locust data management and early warning;
liaise with FAO staff and national locust control units to improve data collection and reporting in a sustainable manner;
closely collaborate with the Environment, Climate Change and Bioenergy Division (NRC) to ensure that corporate standards for spatial information and information sharing are applied, and ensure effective information exchange with other FAO programmes related to spatial information;
perform other related duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Candidates should meet the following:
University Degree in Natural Sciences or related field with academic specialization in Geographical Information Systems
Three years of relevant experience related to spatial analysis of point data and customization of GIS applications;
Working knowledge of English and French
SELECTION CRITERIA Candidates will be assessed against the following:
Demonstrated ability to analyze spatial point data using a geographic information system
Extent of experience in customization of GIS applications
Depth of knowledge of data management
Quality of both oral and written communication skills in the required languages
Initiative, maturity and sense of responsibility and ability to work under pressure
Please note that all candidates should possess computer/word processing skills and should be capable of working with people of different national and cultural backgrounds. * The length of appointment for internal FAO candidates will be established in accordance with applicable policies pertaining to the extension of appointments.
REMUNERATION
Level P-2 carries a net salary per year (inclusive of a variable element for post adjustment) from US$ 78,373 US$ 96,354 (without dependants) and from US$ 83,555 to US$ 103,261 (with dependants)
