The Local Marine Planner is responsible for assisting with the regional implementation of Living Oceans Society's Marine Planning and Protected Areas campaign. This program is designed to ensure ecosystem based management of the marine environment in B.C. including the establishment of a network of marine protected areas. 
The Local Marine Planner will work with northern Vancouver Island and Central Coast communities to build a constituency of support for the implementation of EBM and the creation/effective management of a network of MPAs, either as outcomes of marine planning or through partnerships fostered between LOS and First Nations, stakeholders, and community groups.

Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement Living Oceans Society's regional conservation program including (but not limited to) outreach with local and First Nations governments, communities, residents and stakeholder groups
  • Develop local marine planning communications as appropriate including press releases, blogs, social media tools, web materials and publications
  • Build a constituency of support in the northern Vancouver Island and Central Coast region for EBM and MPAs
  • Identify and develop local and regional partnerships for joint projects to advance conservation dialogue in the north Vancouver Island and Central Coast region
  • Solicit input on planning products for northern Vancouver Island and the Central Coast from the local conservation community and help to build capacity for these groups to engage in planning processes
  • Participate in regional ENGO (environmental non-governmental organizations) network meetings as necessary to coordinate strategies and tactics
  • Represent Living Oceans Society on the northern Vancouver Island Marine Planning Advisory Committee (MPAC) and other advisory boards as required.
  • A familiarity with the communities from Campbell River to Bella Bella with particular emphasis on northern Vancouver Island
  • A familiarity with the marine conservation groups in northern Vancouver Island and Central Coast and their work
  • Post secondary education in resource management, science, or environmental studies considered an asset
  • Experience in or understanding of marine planning, North East Pacific marine ecology, marine protected areas in general and the policies specific to the Pacific coast of Canada
  • Knowledge of First Nations governments in the region is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of and commitment to ecosystem based management
  • Commitment to Living Oceans Society's mission and programs
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with staff, partner organizations, scientific community, and government decision makers
  • Ability to work independently and conduct project work and team meetings by phone and other remote media
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills
  • Fearlessness, creativity, initiative and perseverance are considered assets
  • Willingness to travel within the northern Vancouver Island region
  • Good team player, flexible work style, and excellent interpersonal skills
