Short Summary:

JNCC has a pivotal role working with the four countries of the UK to understand the different approaches, share experiences across the countries and ensure best use is made of JNCC’s evidence sources to ensure a ‘high nature, low carbon’ approach.

An important part of JNCC’s core role has been assessing change in national biodiversity through a range of citizen science species surveillance schemes and, more recently, developing the capability to use Earth Observation data to assess change in habitats. However, there is now a huge opportunity to expand this capability to detect more localised change such as the impact of specific interventions both to assess effectiveness of policies and improve models of broader change.

The post holder will lead this area of work. They will work to build a good overview of the requirements and opportunities and direct how the methods and analytical techniques can be developed to meet these to provide cost effective change detection at local scales and ensure the outputs can be integrated within other processes and systems. They will be responsible for developing and maintaining the funding to support the work, working closely with the four country governments and their agencies. Much of the delivery will be through bilateral funding with individual country governments where the post holder will need to ensure robust project management to ensure transparent delivery.

The post holder will:

  • Take the lead on delivery for key components of this work but will work collaboratively with co-team leads to build, motivate, manage, and deploy the multi-disciplinary team needed to undertake this work as well as related national monitoring and applied monitoring work.
  • Work within the UK programme board with other Team Leaders to develop JNCC’s strategy to support the four UK countries. This involves building an understanding of JNCC’s broader portfolio and supporting balancing resources across teams to strengthen the overall role of JNCC.
